Poetic Justice

Hi I'm Spook (Michael) and I am asking for $10,000 to go towards making a documentary. I’ve been in prison for almost 20 years because I defended my friend and myself from an unjustified attack. This wasn’t a street fight. It was an assault by a group of people who were unknown to us. My friend almost lost his life. The people trying to kill him were drunk, off-duty law enforcement. These people used the position of power to put forth a false narrative which resulted in an unfair murder conviction. This documentary will help keep the truth alive and be a step towards overdue justice.

I don’t want to misrepresent or exaggerate any claims. When I say “defending my friend” it almost sounds like I’m trying to make myself a hero of this story. I only did what I was morally obligated to do. I’m a flawed person in a flawed situation. My friend and I were at a bar with our dates when he was jumped by a group of law enforcement and corrections officers, although we had no idea at the time who these people were. He was beaten with excessive force by drunk police as well as guards.

This fight scene occurred in a parking lot as we were trying to leave. I tried to stop the attack with my hands, but the guard threw me to the ground and tried to choke me out. I got away and was immediately handed a gun. Of course I knew how serious that was but one of these people had bitten meat out of my friend’s back and he was bleeding everywhere while being strangled.

I brandished the gun to break up the fight. My friend regained his senses and we retreated. While backing away, I was rushed and almost tackled so I shot. At this point I am said to have murdered a deputy and wounded a State Police officer. The events I described were not murder, but that narrative was altered to transform the officers into Good Samaritans. The sanitized version of events was put forth on all local news sources. All the scientific video evidence supported my actions being defensive but rather than look at the available facts, these news sources already decided which version of events to run with solely based on the official police story. Unionized law enforcement used this situation to gather support for tougher policing, criminal sentencing, and to even expand the death penalty in New Mexico. During his presidency, George W. Bush even latched on to this incident, flying the deputy’s family to Washington DC where the deceased’s name was put on a memorial wall which honors police killed in the line of duty.

My conviction was inevitable after the fallen hero story had taken hold. The prosecution for my trial was vindictive and dishonest. The state went to ridiculous lengths, even removing time stamped frames from security video footage showing the incident; Further more they destroyed my friend’s blood evidence to help minimize the extent of his attack, and charged one of the witnesses and the initial victim with first degree murder to suppress self defense testimony. I had no chance at a fair trial as my conviction was stolen.
Thank you for reading these words and please listen to my song “Can You Hear Me” featuring Genevieve Zamora at freespook.com and I’m hopeful to have the chance to share more about my case with lawyers, activists, and people who want to help fight abusive power. I am also going to college for certification in Drug Counseling because that is what my community needs right now.

So long as ridiculous and indefinite prison sentences are a thing there needs to be a place for stories like mine. I lost my freedon for the rest of my life because of several demonstrable lies which covered up the actions of some people who just happened to have badges. At this point it would help me a lot more to just go along with a lie and show remorse for killing a hero, but that wouldn’t be true. Not only is it wrong, but it goes against every purported American value that I have been led to believe matters. That’s why I need your help to get my story out there.
