The Downing Family Cancer Fight

Donation protected

Our family has been dealt a real blow without any kind of notice.  What we thought was just a shoulder injury on my husband, Roger, has snowballed into an end-stage cancer diagnosis.  Sadly, there is no treatment that will  make any kind of difference.  The technical name is renal cell carcinoma.  In normal terms, it is kidney cancer and it has spread to his lymph nodes, spine, and lungs.  The oncologist has given him a matter of weeks.  Obviously, this has left no time for an adjustment period and things are still sinking in.

Because of how bad it is, he is unable to work and is at home on hospice care.  I have to stay home with him to help take care of Roger and that leaves me unable to work.  Hospice does not provide long shift day care that would allow me to work.  While our families and friends have been nothing but supportive, we are lacking in the funds department.  A friend referred us to GoFundMe.com to look for help.

Our goal is $15,000.  This would cover our living costs for the next three months, his final expenses, and part of his medical bills.  Cancer is not like having a baby. There is no due date and weeks could, hopefully, turn into months.  The longer I am able to stay home with him, and after with our 11 year old son, the better.  I cannot see leaving our kiddo home by himself with this during the upcoming summer.

Right now, we are taking it one day at a time and appreciating the time that we have with each other.  Neither of us thought that this would even be a consideration at his age of 42 and mine of 32.  It has been a real slap in the face about really appreciating the good things.

If you could donate anything, even a little, our family would appreciate it.  Every little bit helps.  Even if you can't donate, if you could share this and pass the word, we would be grateful.  This has really opened our eyes about all of the true and loving people in our lives.  Embrace the ones you love, you never know how long you have with them.  Thanks to everyone for your kind wishes and positive thoughts.
