TRIP TO BURY MY PARENTS AND SISTERS

Donation protected
Hi everybody,

My name is Evelyne Mukasonga, and I’m a survivor of the Rwandan genocide from 1994. I came to the US as refugee with the help of the United Nations, and I was able to go to school and graduate in Dental Hygiene. I have worked as a dental hygienist since 2009, but I was laid off in March due to downsizing of the company. While I am looking for work, this temporary situation has made it impossible for me to go through with a project that is very important to me and the communities I belong to in the US and in Rwanda.

As you may know, this year is the 20th anniversary of the Rwandan genocide, and June 19, 2014 is the day that the survivors in my family will bury my parents, sisters and others people who were killed in the Genocide in my town.

During the genocide I wasn’t able to cry for my parents and other loved ones; I was hiding and I didn’t know if I would get out of the country alive. I held my sorrows and cries inside me  to avoid being noticed and killed.  My two brothers want me to be there so we can cry and bury our parents in honor.  They were buried near the ordinary tombs. The money  I raise will  pay for my trip and also for a contribution for the country's memorial to all of the victims of the genocide.

In addition, my brothers and I want to rebuild our beautiful parents’ home that was completely destroyed during the attack,so we can turn it into a school that will be available to all children in the town. We believe that providing education and peace education is the best way to make sure that this kind of tragedy will never happen again.  I don’t wish anybody to see what I saw .

I hope that your kind help will enable me to participate in the event to honor my parents and see my brothers again, and that together we will be able to start “RUTHA SCHOOL” . This name came from my parents both names. My father Ruhumuliza and my mom Thamar.

I appreciate and am grateful of your help
