Our beloved father, Huig Ouwehand passed away very unexpectantly on the 17th April 2014 in Banjul, The Gambia.
When he was taken to hospital, he refused to call and let us know since he did not want to worry any of us unnecessarily. Being the optimist that he was, he had no idea that this would be his end - hours later he was dead due to respiratory failure at the age of 71. We had no chance to say goodbye and to tell him how much we loved him or what a remarkable man he was. We are all devastated.
Unfortunately, he had no travel insurance. My mother, brother and I would like to try and raise enough money to cover the costs of bringing his body back home to Cape Town, South Africa. It is against religious laws to cremate in The Gambia, so we only have two options: either a burial in The Gambia or repatriation.
As you can imagine, it is really difficult for us as a family to ask for financial donations, but we desperately want to lay our father to rest in a place he called home and we simply do not have the funds to do so.
He wasn't just a loving father, grandfather and husband, he was also a good friend to many people. He was a remarkable fisherman and Captain and he has left a crater in our hearts now that he is gone.
We hope you are able to help our family make this a reality so that we can honour him and lay him to rest at peace.
Thank you from the bottom of our broken hearts xx
