Hello,
My name is Keith Auspland and in a month I will be retiring from the United States Army after over 20 years of military service. Of my service, I have spent over 5 years overseas including multiple deployments to Iraq.
I have a clinical diagnosis of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and a Traumatic Brain Injury incurred from my combat deployments.
Ever since I have been home life has not been the same. I have spent the last two years of my career at the Warrior Transition Unit at Fort Knox, Kentucky where I have undergone major medical treatment from surgeries to Mental Health counseling and career and family counseling.
I have serious issues with being in public places and am especially on guard all the time. I have spent the last five years fortifying my home and protecting my family from unseen and probably non-existent enemies.
I have been given the chance to have a military service dog and have that dog trained by some wonderful trainers in Radcliffe, Kentucky. This military service dog will assist me in all of my daily routines and I know with my dog's help I will be able to start to reintegrate myself back into normal society. To take my family to the mall without scanning all the exits and the people in the mall; to sit in a restaraunt without having to have my back to the rest of the patrons; to be able to sit in a movie theater and not freak out. These are just some of the things that this service dog will allow me to do once again for the first time in a very long time.
I am preparing to retire from the Army and this is going to be another MAJOR adjustment to myself and my family. Having a service dog to help me process this transition and to assist me in my everyday activities of daily living will be a dream come true for me as this is the only thing that is left to help me come back home from Iraq
