Hi! My names Tom and I'm a 20-year-old student at Manchester Metropolitan University. I am a transgender man and for the last 2 years, I have been saving all my spare wages and birthday money in order to physically transition so I can feel better, happier and safer with myself.
Due to the fact, the NHS waiting lists are so long and their resources so limited I have had to finance my own transition whilst going to University and living independently. I have started HRT (Hormone Replacement Therapy) and paid £600 in appointments and a further £10 a month for the prescription, which doesn't sound like a lot but as a student from a low-income family it adds up and I am being forced to manage my finances in a way that means I can tend to miss out on certain social events due to simply not having the funds. Furthermore, I have already saved £3500 plus the £600 already spent and I still need to get to £8,902 for the surgery.
I can confidently say that since starting HRT I am the happiest and most comfortable I have ever felt but I'm not done and I still feel like I'm missing something and I am sure that getting top surgery would greatly improve my quality of life and general mental wellbeing. I grew up in the wrong body and I want to fix that as much as I can and I don't want to waste any more time, and I can't move on to the next stage of my life without this surgery.
If all of my Facebook friends donated £4 I would easily meet my £2000 target and if everyone donated £7 I would make all the money I am missing in order to get surgery. However, I totally understand that not everyone is in the financial position wherein which they can donate any money I just want to put it into perspective. So I am just asking for anything that can be given because a little goes a long way.
My 20th birthday is coming soon and I would love it if you, my friends and family could donate instead of anything else. By my 21st birthday, it would mean the absolute world to me to be at a different place in my life and ready to go into full-blown adulthood without this constant nagging in the back of my mind, looking and feeling how I should. I can't put into words how much this would mean to me and if you donate you'll never fully comprehend how thankful I would be.
