Many of you know Susan Wiater and if not you may have been touched by her inspiring work whether as a martial arts instructor or a professional dog trainer and animal rescue volunteer and advocate. I am writing here because Susan has suffered an unfortunate injury during the course of her pro-bono work and will require some costly medical treatments.
As you may already know, Susan has had a direct positive impact on so many people's lives. As a martial arts instructor she taught and inspired many people ranging from children to adults and senior citizens. She has been a positive role model for young people and helped them develop positive attitudes and self-discipline. With her adult students she has inspired them and coached them into achieving their potential in their athletic and martial arts endeavors. Her students have developed not just their physical and athletic skills under her coaching, but also self confidence and discipline which they carry into their lives outside of the martial arts.
In recent years Susan has turned her attention to similarly helping animals in need. As a professional dog trainer she has taught her clients - who range from individuals to animal shelters and animal rescue organizations - how to use effective modern and scientifically based methods of animal training, based on compassion for and respect for the animals. As a tireless advocate for animal welfare, she has given her own time, energy and money to save homeless dogs and cats and find them new homes, and specializing in rehabilitating fearful and aggressive dogs. She does a lot of her training pro-bono, helping many low income pet owners to live more harmoniously with their dogs by providing her training and conlsulting services free of charge if they are unable to pay.
It was during one such situation when Susan suffered a nasty accident. On April 10 she was breaking up a dog fight between two dogs that were not her own but which she had voluntarily taken in to work with on her own time and at her own expense. Her left thumb got bitten off in the process, it was a freak accident as the dog was not intending to bite her. Despite the horrific accident she kept her cool and still kept the dogs' welfare as her top priority, making sure they were calmed down, safe and OK before allowing someone to drive her to the ER (and initially she wanted to drive herself too!). Unfortunately the doctors were not able to reattach her thumb (which she had found on the floor and brought along to the ER in a zip lock bag!! Those of you who knew her from martial arts know she is tough as nails!! She even took a photo of her hand with the severed thumb while waiting in the ER! This is an appeal to help Susan cover the cost of her ongoing medical bills. As a self-employed small business owner, she does not get any paid time off from work, and at the time of the accident health insurance was not affordable so her medical bills are very expensive. She has given so much of her time, energy and money to help her community, that it is only fitting that now in her time of need for her community to help her.
