Help us get Elena out of Detention!

Donation protected
DREAMS @ UCI learned about Elena after a few members visited her in detention and heard her story. At 18, Maria Elena Guillen took it upon herself to improve her family's situation in Honduras. She traveled for 30 days on train through Mexico not knowing exactly how to get to the U.S. While other traveling immigrants guided her through her journey, she was instantly apprehended upon arriving at the U.S. border.

Elena has been detained at the James A. Musick facility in Irvine for six months for no other offense except attempting to enter the country without proper documentation. Since her arrival, she's made two phone calls to her mother, who manages to insert her profuse appreciation for everything we're doing on behalf of her daughter during the brief call. That we know of, only one other community member has visited Elena at the detention center throughout her six to seven month stay.

Elena has but one or two family friends in the United States who are not in a position to assist her in any way. We have made arrangements with a youth shelter to ensure that Elena has a safe and supportive place to live upon her release. The shelter provides additional educational, employment and health resources for homeless youth that we're hopeful will benefit Elena. The only obstacle precluding her release from the detention facility is a $1500 bond amount.

Any amount in support of her release is greatly appreciated.
