Medical Mission Trip to Yantalo Peru

Donation protected
Hi everyone!

I am finally taking a step into doing something I have always wanted to do. Along with the help of others, I am currently planning a medical mission trip to Yantalo, Peru. Yantalo is a small community located in the Peruvian Amazon Jungle. The families in this area are deprived from many essential necessities such as clean water, water to shower, paved roads, and especially medical attention. The Yantalo Peru Foundation has gathered enough donations to build a 16-bed International Clinic (the first green clinic in Peru) as well as brining essential necessities into the community. This clinic is providing service to all the people in the region and does not deny anyone for financial reasons while also providing health education for the community.

A little bit of who I am and what I will be doing in Yantalo. I am currently a Biological Science Major and a Psychology minor at the University of Illinois at Chicago with an interest in Pre-Med. After my grandfather's diagnosis of colon cancer I realized that culture influences many choices in medicine. The necessity of physicians that can not only talk the same language as the patient but also understand a patient's culture became my biggest motivation to become a physician. I am really big in giving back to the community. I have been volunteering in St. Anthony Hospital's Emergency Department for four years already. I also mentor young girls in Corkery Elementary School under Project COMP. I believe that keeping in touch with your culture is very important as well and since music is a very big part in my life I volunteer in a mariachi called Mariachi Lupita and help the children there learn how to play the violin, guitar, and vihuela. I am also involved at UIC. I am a member of Medicina Scholars as well as Gamma Phi Omega International Sorority, incorporated, where we focus on academic excellence, cultural awareness, community service and sisterhood. Within my freshmen year of college I conducted a research project with the help of Dr. Ramos titled, From Traditional to Western Medicine: Health Care Practices Among Mexican Americans in Chicago and presented it at the IALHEA. I am only a sophomore and I cannot wait to see where my future takes me

I have had the honor to meet people who have helped me connect with Luis Vasquez MD, one of the founders of Yantalo Peru Foundation. After realizing how amazing this program is and with the help of many, we were able to organize a group of pre-med students to come along with us to Yantalo this summer for eleven days. We will be assisting in the brand new Yantalo Clinic as well as providing educational services to the community on Alzheimer's Disease, sexual education to teenagers and prenatal care to many mothers who are expecting.

Although my dream is becoming a reality, it is also extremely expensive, especially for a college student. We will be taking two flights, a bus ride and taxi ride in order to get to Yantalo. There we will be staying 11 days at a host house. I would really appreciate any donations for this amazing medical mission trip to Yantalo, Peru. Thank you so much!
