Background:
Sofia was recently selected for the 2014 class of the Women's Campaign School (WCS) at Yale--a prestigious program that selects 20 women from around the world. WCS is a non-partisan, issue neutral leadership program that helps women get elected to office. She is raising money to cover the cost of tuition, lodging, and travel--and she needs your support!
Why you should support Sofia:
Sofia first came up to Arcata to attend Humboldt State University nearly a decade ago. She received her Bachelor's in Communication and minor in Social Advocacy from Humboldt State University in 2009. During her tenure at HSU, Sofia was elected Associated Students President as a write-in candidate and represented 7,500 students on the campus, local, and state level. It was during her time at HSU that she became involved in local politics.
Sofia is a tireless volunteer for various causes and organizations. She served on the Arcata Committee on Democracy and Corporations, the Humboldt County Human Rights Commission, and founded the North Coast Young Democrats. Sofia is currently the president of Lost Coast Rotaract, a service club for young professionals sponsored by the Rotary Club of Eureka and an elected member of the Humboldt County Democratic Central Committee.
Throughout her work in the community, Sofia has been an advocate for women empowerment. She was a Six Rivers Planned Parenthood board member in 2010-2014 and the Secretary-Treasurer in 2012-13. In addition to her work locally, Sofia has direct experience in national politics through her previous work as Political Program Fellows at Women's Campaign Fund (WCF) in Washington DC. Sofia was responsible for tracking nearly 100 federal and state executive races across the country to identify and recruit pro-choice women candidates to receive the benefits of WCF endorsement.
Currently, Sofia is the Legislative Analyst for the Humboldt County Department of Health and Human Services. She researches and tracks state and federal legislation along with representing rural county concerns to our legislative representatives and statewide advocacy groups. Previously, Sofia was the Field Representative for Assemblymember Wesley Chesbro in Humboldt, Del Norte, and Trinity Counties.
Along with her experience in campaigns and government, Sofia will represent Humboldt County well at the Women's Campaign School. She hopes to bring back what she learns to encourage and support other women candidates and community issues.
