Time With New Baby for Leela + Seth

We are a self-employed musician and music teacher (Leela) and an assistant wine/beer steward (Seth) who have been together for over 10 years. We are ecstatically expecting our first baby in mid-August 2014! AND we got married on June 21! 2014 is shaping up to be quite a year for us! As we pondered the tradition of gift giving for weddings and baby showers, we realized that the greatest gift that we could possibly imagine was the gift of more time with our new baby.
As a self-employed musician, Leela has no maternity leave, no sick leave, no vacation pay… Simply put, as long as she is not working, she is not making any income. We would love the luxury of taking several months after the baby is born for Leela to focus solely on her new role as mother.
As an hourly worker in the United States, Seth also has no paid paternity leave. He has protected leave through the FMLA – up to 12 weeks – but it will be unpaid. We would love if he could have at least a month for us all to bond as a new family!
As you know, bills do not take maternity leave. While we have been trying to save up to make this possible, your donation will give us the most precious gift of more time with our beautiful new little one. We would relish having that time to really get to know this amazing new little person without the worry of financial concerns creeping in.
In our years together, we have already lived through many experiences/challenges, including (but certainly not limited to): * Moving approximately 8 times (starting with Seth's move back to Missouri from Florida after we first met and ending with our most recent move into our third house in Portland, Oregon)
* Fostering or adopting at least 15 dogs and cats who were in various states of injury, need, or abandonment
* Surviving Seth's years in graduate school and his year working the overnight shift
* Making it through Leela's many ups and downs, travels, and reinventions as a self-employed musician, music teacher, and business owner
We have always faced the challenges that came our way with the love and humor that we find together AND with the help, strength, generosity, and love of our friends, family, and community. We are excited to embark on this new adventure as a family and as part of a loving community…
