Hysterectomy surgery needed ASAP

          Hello! We are Chris and Marisa Hernandez and we would like to start off by thanking you from the bottom of our hearts for taking the time to read our story.

          We understand not everyone will agree with this method of fundraising, and we hope that through our transparency everyone including those who don’t agree will be kind and understanding. 


          I will start off by telling you a little bit about Chris and I!  We have been together since 2004, and have been married since 2017, but have been best friends since we were in middle school. We live in San Antonio, TX with our two dogs, Marley and Girl, and our two cats, Martini and Jerry. I am thirty-one years old, and work full time in San Antonio for a non-profit organization helping my community build trust in the marketplace. Chris is thirty-two years old and works in San Antonio and surrounding areas as a self contractor delivering parts to auto dealerships. He is such a motivated, hard worker that always goes the extra mile. Life with Chris and our paw babies has been nothing short of a true, grade school crush turned love story, but unfortunately, just not quite a complete one, just yet.


          When Chris and I were seventeen years old, fresh out of high school, when we moved in together. I went to college while we both worked at a local restaurant together full time. We dreamed of having a family and getting married but I became ill, throwing up almost every month. After years of multiple trips to the ER, The doctors said my gallbladder wasn’t functioning and removed it in 2012. Since I had less symptoms, we thought the problem was solved. I got pregnant shortly after the surgery and we were thrilled but my symptoms slowly progressed until my miscarriage/still birth in December of the same year. Chris and I struggled very hard with the loss for a long while but we found peace and faith again, and I finally finished my associates in Dec 2013 and my bachelors in Aug 2015. During that time I was diagnosed PCOS while My father was diagnosed with terminal cancer. While my symptoms progressed, I ignored my health to spend more time with my father until the pain and symptoms were too much to bare. I went to my OB and discovered adnexal growth on my left ovary the size of a baseball. Without compromising my entire uterus, the growth and ovary were immediately removed in Nov of 2016 but was diagnosed with stage 3 endometriosis. For all who are unfamiliar, there is no cure for endometriosis without removing the ovaries, and taking hormone replacement and only treatment and medication to help manage the symptoms but nothing to prevent the growth of it without surgery. As I recuperated from that surgery, my father became more ill, so we arranged a quick wedding in Feb of 2017, two days after my thirtieth birthday, just so that he could be there to give me away, his only and also adopted child. He passed away two days later.


          We were so grateful to have had that time with him but as I mourned, I started a new job and healed from his passing, my symptoms progressed yet again. I recently went back to the OB/Endocrinologist treating my endometriosis who examined the cause of the pain via ultrasound only to find the inevitable that the endometriosis is starting to consume the right and only remaining ovary. I am now at a stage 4 of endometriosis.

          Now that Chris and I are married, we’ve been ready to start a family of our own, for quite some time now, but with the advancing endometriosis, they need to remove the remaining ovary and rapidly growing endometrioma as soon as possible. We have been staying positive during the treatment before surgery, while also researching the options that are available to us to help us one day achieve a baby of our own since they will be removing the other ovary very soon. We have gone to the Advanced Fertility Center and spoke with a specialist who told us that with our situation IVF would save any eggs before my remaining ovary is compromised and removed and the uterus as well. The doctors said that removing the eggs now would give us a chance at our own biological children even after endometriosis inevitably compromises the uterus as well.

          In Vitro fertilization (IVF) is a complex series of procedures used to treat fertility and assist with the conception of a child biologically or via surrogate. Unfortunately, our insurance does not cover IVF at all. The Advanced Fertility Center is $22,700 to cover the procedure and all medications that go along with it. The doctor assured us that they will do everything possible to help us along our journey. They calmed our nerves a little by letting us know their policy at AFC. Their policy guarantees that with the money we spend on IVF will give us multiple chances to conceive biologically or via surrogate. 

       Being adopted, my parents know first hand the trials and tribulations of failed conception and have been so emotionally and spiritually supportive, and for this we are truly blessed. And with the help of all our family, friends, and church, we have been trying to stay positive through this process which is really just the beginning. This personal journey we have decided to share with anyone reading is very difficult to do. We have tried to fight this privately, but have come to the realization that we are going to need some help. Infertility is draining, both financially and emotionally, which has brought us here.
