We have lost our minds and have signed up to take on the tough Mudders Challenge to raise Money for Hamish Thompson.
Hamish Tompson:
At 9 weeks old Hamish (16yrs old) had developed a perianalabscess. He was examined by a GP who prescribed a course of antibiotics and advised that he should stil has his vaccinations. Three days later the perianal
abscess had to be lanced and drained under a general anaesthetic in Hospital. From that point onwards each time Hamish had a bowel movement the faeces containing the live oral polio virus contaminated the
wound resulting in Hamish's body being exposed to avast amount of increasingly virulent polio virus. The exposure to the polio virus resulted in Hamish contracting Vaccine Associated Paralytic Poliomyelitis.
Hamish does not have any close friendships due to the difficulties of not being able to socialise with children his age where homes are not accessible for a powered wheelchair.
The money will go towards giving Hamish the independance to drive, which will require a specail Mobility car.
In the High Court, Hamish won a claim for compensation which would have ensured that his needs could be met for the rest of his life. But on appeal, in the High Court, this decision was reversed on a point of law and Hamish received nothing.
A breakdown of the costs incurred in daily living show that as a rough estimate over 12 months, a total of £10,500 (gross) per annum is required to provide for Hamish's care and special needs. And costs are rising all the time. As he grows, Hamish's needs change and grow with him as he becomes taller and heavier.
The future for Hamish is totally dependent on having the right resources, equipment and support network to help him to reach his full potential. With his complicated requirements and special physical needs it is not possible for this to be done by relying only on the NHS and Social services.
