To graduate law school has been a huge feat for me. Growing up in a working class neighborhood in Oakland, Ca I had limited access and exposure to anyone that graduated from college, yet alone law school. Law school was a far stretch for me, but by the grace of God somehow I have managed to graduate from the world-renowned UCLA with both a Bachelor's of Art and a Juris Doctorate. While my education has been partly funded by scholarship, I have unfortunately had to take out a large amount of student loans to fund the rest of my education. And I planned to finance this upcoming summer the same way.
For those who are unfamiliar with the process of becoming a lawyer, you must first complete law school and then pass a state BAR examination. To prepare for the BAR, students spend a couple of grueling months studying full time, forcing most students to remain unemployed and without any source of income. As the CA BAR is one of the hardest BAR examinations in the country, most students would not dare to work at this time. Thus most students fund this period with loans, while others are more priviledged.
Over the years I have become comfortable with using loans to fund my education, but recently this has begun to bother me quite badly. While it is not profitable, smart, or a sustainable way of living, it is also something I want to move away from spiritually. As a result I have decided to take a leap of faith and have made a commitment to being debt free. While it is still scary for me to say this outloud for fear of failure and judgement, faith has taught me fear does not mean 'stop', it simply means you are humble enough to admit you can do nothing on your own. To work towards my goal includes not taking out loans to pay my bills this summer. While this is a strange time to take this leap, I strongly believe in this prinicple and have already begun to take steps towards my newfound commitment. This has included picking up extra hours at work, severly cutting down my expenses and bills, and working additional jobs to fully pay for my BAR prep course (worth $4212.50) on my own.
In this period of being as creative as possible with my finances, I am asking for both your support and help. IF you are so convicted, I would appreciate your contribution in any way. Whether it is a financial commitment, spiritual commitment, emotional commitment or anything else, everything helps. I have been blessed to learn that my road to becoming an attorney is a community effort and I cannot travel this road alone.

$500 = a car note payment for a month
$100 = a cell phone bill for a month
$120 = groceries for a month
$120 = gas for a month
$80 = utilities for a month
$140 = car insurance for a month
