Help Rebuild the Lajee Center's Media Unit

On December 4th, the Israeli army broke into the Lajee Center in the middle of the night and stole very important equipment from the Media Unit, including our two video cameras. Without this equipment the Media Unit can no longer function. Unfortunately, the cost of replacing this equipment far exceeds the budget of the Unit. In order for us to carry out our important work, we urgently need the support of our friends around the world.

Since its establishment in 2009, the Lajee Center ’s Media Unit has been dedicated to producing creative arts and media projects that improve the expressive skills of young Palestinians. The Unit has produced dozens of films, videos and reports, published photography books, lead training courses and workshops, held photo exhibitions in and outside of Palestine, and won international prestigious awards.
In recent years, the Media Unit has also played a crucial role in documenting human rights violations committed by the Israeli armed forces in Aida Camp and in the Bethlehem area more generally. The evidence collected by the Unit is regularly used by human rights organizations in their reports and judicial proceedings, and it has also been an essential advocacy tool for raising awareness about the flagrant human rights violations taking place in the occupied Palestinian territories on a daily basis.
Because of its vital role in denouncing the military occupation, the Media Unit is regularly targeted by the Israeli army. Last December 4th, Israeli armed forces broke into the Lajee Center in the middle of the night and stole a large number of extremely valuable items from the Media Unit. This raid has had a severe impact on the Media Unit, as most of our equipment was taken. Today, we can no longer document events or run our weekly training courses.
Below is the list of items that were confiscated from the Media Unit on December 4th, 2019. Their replacement is essential for the Media Unit to continue working successfully. The list includes the technical details of the materials taken. The prices refer to the cost of the item when it was purchased by the Unit (initial costs). Therefore, the cost of replacing the items now might differ.
Any and all donations bring us closer to making the Media Unit fully operational again. The importance of the Unit cannot be overstated. All contributions, financial or material, are much appreciated.

El pasado 4 de diciembre el ejército israelí entró en la Unidad Audiovisual del Lajee Center en mitad de la noche y se llevó gran parte del material, incluyendo dos cámaras de video profesionales. Sin este material la Unidad Audiovisual no puede operar. Lamentablemente, el coste de reemplazar este equipo supera el presupuesto de la Unidad. Para que este importante trabajo audiovisual siga adelante, el Lajee Center necesita el apoyo de tod@s sus amig@s alrededor del mundo.

Desde su establecimiento en el 2009, la Unidad Audiovisual del Lajee Center se ha dedicado a producir proyectos artísticos y audiovisuales que ayudan a fomentar el talento y las habilidades comunicativas de los jóvenes del campo de refugiados de Aida. La Unidad ha producido docenas de cortometrajes, vídeos, informes y libros de fotografía, muchos de las cuales han ganado premios internacionales. El Centro organiza también cursos, talleres y exhibiciones de fotografía y cortometrajes tanto dentro como fuera de Palestina.
Estos últimos años la Unidad Audiovisual ha jugado un papel crucial documentando las violaciones de derechos humanos que cometen las fuerzas armadas israelíes en el campo de Aida, así como en la zona de Belén, en Cisjordania. La documentación de estos hechos por el Lajee Center se ha usado como prueba de violaciones en informes de ONGs y procedimientos judiciales. Además, los materiales han sido esenciales para concienciar sobre la situación de los derechos humanos y las flagrantes violaciones que tienen lugar a diario en el territorio ocupado palestino.
Debido a la importancia del material producido, la Unidad Audiovisual y su personal han sido atacados varias veces por el ejército israelí. El pasado 4 de diciembre, el ejército entró en el Lajee Center durante la madrugada y se llevó el material más valioso de la Unidad. Esta incursión ha impactado de manera significativa el trabajo documental del Lajee Center, dado que los soldados se llevaron todo el material necesario para llevarlo a cabo. Se han cancelado indefinidamente las clases semanales para jóvenes y niñ@s y en estos momentos el Centro no tiene capacidad para documentar ninguno de los abusos que el ejército israelí sigue cometiendo en el campo.
