Dear Friends and Family,

As you know, I am about to close one important chapter in my life and look forward to a new one. In preparation for this new journey, I have become more and more aware of the vital importance of service. All over the world, children are born with so little, and through service, it is possible to help improve the quality of life for them, their family, and communities.

For this reason, I have decided to volunteer in Nicaragua this summer for Rayo de Sol, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping children. Nicaragua is the second poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, after Haiti. Nicaragua is a country that has endured earthquakes, hurricanes, volcanic eruptions, revolution, civil war, corruption and just about every natural and man-made disaster we can imagine. Poverty affects more than 70% of the population in Nicaragua, and children are most impacted by the unforgiveable trap of chronic poverty. Nearly half of all Nicaraguan families survive on less than $2 a day. Nearly half of the children suffer from some level of malnutrition, and only 40% of the students who begin elementary school finish the sixth grade. Less than 20% of all adolescents are able to earn a high school degree.

Rayo de Sol operates in the city of Matagalpa, two hours north of Managua, Nicaragua's capital. The organization provides quality education, health, nutrition and community development programs for underserved communities. Currently, Rayo de Sol works with more than 500 children and adolescents in Matagalpa, implementing programs in preschool, primary education, health & nutrition and secondary education. I will be working to develop a sports program, as well as helping to teach English as a second language. I am very excited to be working with an organization that is changing so many lives. I am confident that I can make a significant contribution using the skills and abilities I have been fortunate enough to develop over the years.

As part of the service, I will be fundraising to help support Rayo de Sol's programs in Nicaragua. My goal is to raise $3,000, and I am asking for your support in order to reach that goal. Finding the funds is always a challenge for such a small organization, and even small contributions add up to help transform the lives of children, adolescents and families who are trapped in a cycle of chronic poverty, generation after generations.

Please consider supporting a great cause. You may also want to visit the organization Internet site (www.rayodesol.net),

Thank you so much for your consideration and support.

Sincerely,

Jake Savoca
