NAD Youth Leadership Camp

Donation protected
My name is Lyssa Matsche. I am 17 years old and a junior at the Wisconsin School for the Deaf (WSD) in Delavan. I was mainstreamed in Oshkosh through 5th grade. However, I attended a summer camp at WSD and fell in love! I made the hard decision to leave my family (only coming home on weekends) to attend school 2 hours away where I would be among other deaf and hard of hearing kids and have more opportunities to be involved in extracurricular and school-related activities. I have truly been blessed to have such a great family support me and have come to know the kids and teachers at WSD as my extended family!

Every summer, the National Association of the Deaf (NAD) hosts a national youth leadership camp in the woods of Stayton, Oregon, called the NAD Youth Leadership Camp (NAD YLC). The camp chooses only 64 young deaf and hard of hearing Americans from a large pool of high school students nationwide. I was recently honored when NAD YLC selected me to attend their month-long program of intensive leadership development training.

During NAD YLC, campers focus on self-awareness, interacting with leaders in the deaf and hard of hearing community. Throughout the month, we will develop a lifelong network of friends who will support each other for the rest of our lives. An integral part of NAD YLC is educating campers about deaf heritage and culture, along with essential skills to succeed such as writing and public speaking. For more information, please visit http://nad.org/ylccamper and http://nad.org/ylcprogram.

I am an excellent student with a current grade point average of 3.7, and I have consistently been on high honors throughout my high school career. I am active in sports and am currently a part of my school's Junior NAD, student body government, Sign Song Dance team, and Academic Bowl. I am a member of the National Honor's Society. In 7th grade, I was graciously presented with the Daughters of the American Revolution Youth Citizenship Medal. This Medal is presented to students who exemplifies the qualities of honor, service, courage, leadership, and patriotism. I also volunteer at NEWPAWSibilities, which is a rescue place for dogs and cats. I help out with my parents at Lions Club as well.

The NAD Youth Leadership Camp is truly a total package. I am responsible to pay $1,800 for my camp tuition and the cost of transportation. Therefore, I am looking to raise money to be able to attend. Payment for camp is due by May 9 but donations are welcomed until I meet my goal.

Checks can also be mailed to:
