Midwifery Aid to Women in Haiti

Haiti has the highest maternal mortality rate in the Western Hemisphere.
1 out of every 71 women in Haiti will die in childbirth or due to complications from pregnancy. 74 babies out of every 1000 births will die. Skilled maternity care is desperately needed.
MamaBabyHaiti is a birth center in Cap Haitien, Haiti, that serves a low income population with a desperate need for skilled hands. They operate on donations and populate the center with volunteers, like me. I have the training and the skills to make a difference in the lives of women who need a midwife, and I will gain the experience I need while working under the supervision of experienced, skilled midwives in Haiti. They need my hands, and I am overjoyed that I get to pursue my training by helping others.
The clinic is largely funded by volunteers who raise money to go there. The cost for me to volunteer at the clinic is $780.00 per week. Ideally, I will be there for three weeks, arriving on July 19th, 2014. If I can raise additional funds, I can extend my stay another week.

My name is Emily Deckenback, and I am a midwife-in-training in the United States. I have completed my education, and now in order to sit my boards I must complete my clinical hours by attending births, conducting prenatal visits, examining newborns, and more.

Any additional money raised by this campaign will be used to purchase much-needed medical supplies that I can bring on the trip. While I am there I will take lots of pictures and keep a diary, which I will be sending to everyone who makes a donation.
I am happy to come and talk at your church or community group about the conditions in Haiti and my goals while I am there. If an organization donates, I will come to give a talk afterwards as well to show pictures and talk about ongoing needs.
