Lindsay's Marine Biology Adventure

Did you know that 60-80% of the oxygen we breathe comes from the photosynthesis done by marine algae - not trees or the land plants and grasses we usually associate with oxygen production? (Even though they're super important too!) Crazy, huh?!? Well I think that's a really big deal and I want to make it my mission to do everything I can to protect the ocean and all the life in it.

I decided that the best way for me to do that is to become a marine biologist that specializes in the study of climate change and its effects on all the creatures of the sea and the ocean ecosystems.

There are many steps I need to take to get there, however...

One crucial step is getting accepted into a marine biology school such as the University of California - San Diego. Coming from a very small high school of about 120 students on the Salish & Kootenai Indian Reservation here in Montana I have less of a chance than many, unless I am proactive in my education. I am a very good student, currently in my final semester of my Junior year with a 4.0 that I've had since Freshman year, putting me at number 1 in my class and in the running for Valedictorian.

Even so, having a marine biology camp under my belt would give me an important boost and make my college and scholarship applications that much stronger; not to mention it would be an amazing experience!

This summer I have the opportunity to go to SeaCamp San Diego and I'm so excited! It's a two-week marine biology immersion camp where I would gain hands-on experience studying sea turtles, starfish, coral, sea horses and all sorts of other sea creatures in their natural habitat, all under the guidance of actual marine biologists!

There's just one problem: the tuition for the camp is beyond our budget. My mom and I get by but there's not much left over at the end of the month for anything extra.

It would be so awesome if you all would help me make this dream a reality! Every dollar counts! Let's get this Montana born-and-raised girl out of the mountains and into the great blue!
