Leroy Hallman River Legacy Memorial

On April 16th 2014, Leroy Clyde Hallman passed away at 10:34 am in his home beside his life companion, Joan Hallman. Leroy's passing occured on the 4-month anniversary of a traumatic cycling accident that hosplitalized Leroy. He spent the following four months in five different hospitals moving from ICU to LTAC and then to rehab, which was meant to be his final stop before coming home for recovery. However, while in rehab it was discovered that Leroy had three primary brain tumors two of which were on his brain stem and inoperable.

Leroy's strength and courage during his plight impressed not only his friends and family but all of the medical professionals and staff who cared for him. No matter how terrible he felt, Leroy never forgort his courtesies and would raise his hand up to wave in greeting or to say goodbye to those he interacted with from his hospital bed or wheelchair.

This message is being written by his youngest daughter, Shelly Hallman. Many of my memories with my father were from the saddle of a bicycle. As a young girl my fondest memories consist of family bike rides at River Legacy park and surrounding Texas cities. My father and I carried on our cycling tradition even after I moved away for college in San Marcos and then out of state for work. Each time I came home to visit Dad would fix up one of his old bicycles and we would go ride at River Legacy each day that we could.

In 2011 I began downhill mountain biking in my new hometown of Mammoth Lakes, California. This sparked Dad's old interest in mountain biking and we began taking our rides at the off road MTB trails at River Legacy. Dad got so stoked about mountain biking that he purchased a brand new Trek MTB bike and spent just about every day of 2012 on the MTB trails. He started out solo but it didn't take long for him to meet new friends. My father's smiling face became a permanent fixture at the park bench at the exit of the MTB trails. He became known as the friendly old man that was always willing to assist a biker with a flat tire or to encourage and praise other riders he passed by.

Leroy will be buried in his hometown Ben Lomand, Arkansas; a small country town just outside of Texarkana. However, much of Leroy's legacy will live on in Arlington, the town which he lived in for most of his life.

The family is working with the City of Arlington to install a memorial bench and plaque at the mountain bike trails of River Legacy Park for friends and family in the Arlington area to remember Leroy by.

In lieu of flowers, we are asking for donations to pay for the installation of this park bench which will be accompanied by a plaque.

We thank you in advance for your donations and/or consideration in aiding us in memorializing the memory of such an unforgettable man.
