After seeing how successful a few West Haven schools have been in raising money for charities that help children with cancer, an administrator and a teacher are hoping the entire school community can make an even bigger difference this year.
Carrigan Intermediate School Assistant Principal Rich Weber and West Haven High School biology teacher Kevin Dickson are organizing the first Westie Day of Hope, which will be held May 17 in the WHHS courtyard. The gathering will be centered around a head-shaving event, but will also feature booths from school clubs and organizations. Money raised will go toward Camp Rising Sun, a camp in Connecticut for kids across the state who have or have previously fought cancer.
Carrigan Intermediate School and West Haven High School partnered in 2012 to raise money for the St. Baldrick's Foundation and Camp Rising Sun through a head-shaving rally and at the same time showed support for cancer patients who often lose their hair from chemotherapy treatment. More than $25,000 was raised for St. Baldrick's and $3,000 was sent to Camp Rising Sun.
In 2013, Carrigan, WHHS and Bailey Middle School raised more than $30,000 for St. Baldrick's and $4,000 for Camp Rising Sun.
Dickson and Weber pursued a larger event this year to include all schools and to make an even larger impact on childhood cancer. They anticipate the Westie Day of Hope becoming an annual event and officially kicked off this year's campaign during a presentation to the West Haven Board of Education at an April 7 meeting.
"We can help cover costs to take care of these kids at Camp Rising Sun this summer," Weber said. "It's about spreading the word about this fantastic camp and helping to take care of our own."
