Danielle: Beloved Sister, Best Friend and Mother
So I just found out my beloved sister has invasive adenocarcinoma - Breast Cancer
I'm in shock and I am sick.
Why her? This is the question so many ask themselves. You always think it will never happen to you or to someone you know and love especially a beloved sister. Unfortunately, this has become my sister's reality and if I could take this from her I would. I cannot imagine a world without my sister and I cannot imagine her 16 year old daughter without her mom.
I remember the night she found the lump. It was over a year ago. We were on the phone chatting as usual like sisters do when they are close. She started a new job for more money and she was excited because it would make it a bit easier on her, but they didn't offer sick days, vacation days or insurance. Over time her lump got bigger and more and more painful and started displacing ribs from the "˜pulling'. Her employer noticed that she was having health issues and out of the kindness of their heart offered to give her health insurance which she jumped on. It was going to kick in on 4/1/2014 and she made sure to have an appointment that day. Five days later, she received the diagnosis and was immediately scheduled with an oncologist and surgeon.
Why her? She's such a nurturer. She's always taking in strays and finding homes for them. She's an animal and people lover. She's a loyal friend and stays in touch with everyone she's met in her life going back to grade school. She has been working so hard in her spare time trying to get a non-profit company off the ground to help homeless young people and abandoned and abused animals. It's always been a dream of hers.
She's a single mother just trying to make ends meet. She has rent and bills to pay and my beautiful, lovely niece Olivia to raise and this has really thrown her for a loop. Olivia is scared to death and rightly so. But the stress of this is really taking a toll on my sister. Every day she is gone from work getting tests done she doesn't get paid. It is only the 11th day since her first exam and already she has missed 4 days of work, of which she will not be paid. They want to do more tests on her and that is more days that she will have to miss from work. She is scheduled for 4 tests next week and is not sure how she will be able to cover all of her expenses this month because of all the days she has and will miss. She has $7,000 out of pocket insurance expenses alone. I'm seriously worried that the stress is compounding the disease. She just needs to be free from worrying about paying her bills so she can focus on healing. They want her to start on chemo immediately to shrink the mass because they cannot do the double mastectomy she was really hoping to do until it is much smaller. She is now fearful that she will be unable to meet her financial obligations for the next few months. She is consumed with monetary concerns about how she is going to make ends meet instead of being focused on healing and doing everything she can to fight the battle waged in her body.
So, I am writing this in an effort to help her release some of her burden. If I had the money to give, I would in a heartbeat but at this time, I am unable to help her financially. So here I am, making a formal plea to all who might read this. I am desperately asking for help for my sister. I need her in my life. Olivia needs her mom. She's an incredible human being and she deserves the chance to heal w/out worrying about a roof over her head and food on the table. I am in California and she is in New Mexico so as it is I am so far from her and it kills me. If I was closer I could be of more help. If I knew that she was OK financially I wouldn't worry as much but I am constantly worried about her and Olivia. She has a loving family that needs for her to focus on healing. She's so brave but she needs help. I know times are tough for so many but any amount will help. If she can just get through the next 6 months she will be on the road to recovery and Olivia will have her mom and I will have my sister. I know she can beat this thing but she has to be able to have time to heal and not compound what is already there.
Danielle does not feel like she is special. She knows that there are so many women going through this difficult and painful experience. But she is special to a number of people and she really feels that she has work to do to help others that are in need. And I KNOW that she has work to do to help others and I want her to have that chance as so many would benefit.
If it is at all possible for you to make a donation, we, her family, would be eternally grateful for your help.I thank you all from the bottom of my heart and soul.
Simone "“ Danielle's Big Sister

At this time I would like to say a special thank you to her employer. Were it not for the care and concern they have for my sister she would not have gotten this far. They have been incredibly accommodating and have even allowed Danielle to cut her hours in half so she can get some rest and make all her doctor appts and have time to heal. She and we are forever grateful to them for their care and concern for her. In this day and age it is rare for an employers to show such genuine care and concern for their employees in the manner that they have so I cannot thank them enough. Danielle is truly lucky to be working for such wonderful people.
