Karen's Story:
In February of 2002, Karen & Chris Rowe were snuggling on the sofa when Chris felt a strange lump above Karen's right breast. They agreed it was best to take precaution and to contact her doctor to make sure it was nothing serious. Unfortunately, an ultrasound found 3 tumors in her right breast and they were each a different strain of cancer. Her family was devastated. Karen required a radical mastectomy of her right breast and rounds of intense chemotherapy. Losing her hair was emotional, but she understood the necessity.

While Chris & Karen had health coverage, the additional costs not covered were substantial. Chris, being a successful mortgage broker, was able to keep up with most of the costs of this 5 year treatment. On her 5th Anniversary, she received the "All Clear" from her oncologist, only to find another lump 6 months in tissue under the same breast. Karen, being an experienced cancer survivor, knew she had to buck-up once again for what needed to be done. She went through a lumpectomy to remove the mass and began a series received of different chemo treatments including radiation this time. At this time, we began to see the real estate market collapse and Chris' business and income began to decline and the family budget became more & more strained, but they got through the next 5 years and Karen was, once again, given the "All Clear" from her doctors.
Chris began to feel some relief as he, like many other survivors in the Real Estate industry were climbing out of the hole and beginning to see some light in their businesses. And then in Sept 2012, Karen was diagnosed for a 3rd Time with Breast Cancer that had now metastasized and was embedded in her Liver, Lungs & Bones. And there was No Cure for it. With savings and retirement accounts having been depleted through the years of paying for Karen's treatments they could only pray that the treatments she would undergo now would save her life. Karen has undergone hip replacement in December of 2012 due to cancer weakening the bone, 2 rounds of very toxic chemo treatments, the second round was so toxic it turned much of her skin black, her body is in almost constant pain, and has had a catheter in her right lung now for over 18 months to permit the draining of the fluid that builds up every 3 days.

The last scans of her body in March showed the cancer in the liver and lungs were not appearing to spread, but did show progression of the disease in her bones. This required a total new approach to treatment. The new Anti-Estrogen medication is the only remaining option for Karen to Beat the Beast. Karen & Chris' excitement that they had another option was quickly swept aside when they received word that the Co-Pay for this prescription was in excess of $2,500.00 a month.

Tickets are $25 - wonderful food, live music from 8 pm - 10 pm, door prizes, silent auction, cash bar. All proceeds benefit Caring for Karen. Join us at Bogey's Bar & Grille on May 10th - https://www.facebook.com/pages/Bogeys-Bar-Grille/121593607851414
