My sister Loretta Wilson, her husband, Philip Wilson, and their 7 children lost their home to a house fire in the middle of the night on Halloween. Thankful to quick action from my little brother and brother in law and their amazing neighbour, everyone was able to escape the fire; but the damage to the house is irreplaceable.
Philip was brought to Victoria General, treated and released. Loretta was brought to Vancouver General, treated and released. Their youngest son, Enzo, who is 5 was flown to Vancouver Children's Hospital where he is being treated for burns which cover 35% of his body. Mom and dad are with Enzo at the Children's Hospital and the other 6 kids are with family in Duncan. He will have a long road to recovery which will require mom and dad to take some time off of work.

This young family comes from large extended families that have already stepped in to clothe and feed the children. The saying, "you never know what you had until you don't have it,' has never rang so true. The children are safe, taken care of by family members and are providing for their basic needs.
While we, their family, will continue to support their basic living needs, we know we need to look towards their future. I would like to help them begin rebuild their home so that they can have a place to call "home" again.
Loretta, Phil and their children do everything together. It is not uncommon for them to have a couple extra kids as well. When other kids want to stay, they never say no. Their children and their wellbeing are and always have been their first priority. Along with having the trauma of losing their home, they have been separated. We want nothing more than to find them a permanent place that they can get comfortable in and start rebuilding their lives.
Loretta is an LPN and she worked throughout the pandemic. In the last few months she could be found doing things such as, testing, tracing and giving vaccines. She also, on her own time volunteered to deliver food and other things to families who were in isolation. During this time of uncertainty she made sure that her children's life remained as 'normal' as possible. She is so good at what she did that the children, other than missing their friends, did not even know that life outside of home was different. She works hard to provide for them and their needs and somehow always finds a way to get them what they want and need.
Philip, works for Cowichan Tribes. He loves his job and the people he gets to work with. Outside of work, he works very hard to make sure that the children are able to take advantage of every opportunity provided for them. He can often be found driving them to friends, practices, appointments and volunteer work. His family is important to him and their happiness is first and foremost. Philip is not only a great dad to his own kids, but the nieces and nephews call him dad. He has had a big part in their upbringing and always made them feel apart of the family.
The children are always busy in sports, soccer, karate, lacrosse, and cross country. They have travelled all over the United States and Canada to compete in various tournaments. Sports and being active has always been important to the parents. The parents think it's important for the children to not only be a part of the community, but to also give back to the community. They have done such things as, volunteer for different events that happened in Cowichan such as, the Elders Gathering, the BC games, the Salvation Army and the food drive during the pandemic.
I want them to get settled so that they can look forward to doing the things they love to do. As you can imagine, with 7 kids, life gets hectic juggling all their schedules, but they managed. This is the first time that they have ever been apart. This is the first time that they need our help. Normally, they are the ones helping us. Between Loretta and Phil they did it all.
Enzo will be required to stay at Children's Hospital to treat his burns for an unknown length of time. When he is released, it would be nice if they could be returning to a house they can call home.
