Note as of 5/16/14: Wow!! In just five days you helped us reach our SECOND goal of $2,500. This is so humbling, thank you. Again, so people have the option to continue giving if they desire, I've raised the goal once more. We do not need to meet this goal for students to receive these funds. The fundraiser will end at noon on 5/17 so we can begin calculating totals.

Now that we reached our first goal of $2,000, we've raised the goal listed on GoFundMe so that those who still wish to enable our students to travel on their Civil Rights Tour may do so. All funds donated still go directly to helping students afford this trip, and we do not have to reach the goal listed for students to get the benefits. The trip will take place from May 19-23. 88 sixth graders of YES Prep Southwest have earned the privelege to travel on a Civil Rights Tour through Birmingham, AL; Montgomery, AL; and Atlanta, GA. These students represent the best of their class, and are eager to encounter the locations they've learned about to further their education.

88 sixth graders of YES Prep Southwest have earned the privelege to travel on a Civil Rights Tour through Birmingham, AL; Montgomery, AL; and Atlanta, GA. These students represent the best of their class, and are eager to encounter the locations they've learned about to further their education.
Our students come from low-income neighborhoods that experience an "achievement gap" - a disparity in the educational quality and performance between them and students in higher-income neighborhoods. Part of the mission of YES Prep is to close this gap and provide opportunities to enrich our students' lives. For many of our students, this will be their first opportunity to leave the state; possibly even the city.
While YES covers the majority of the cost of trip, some expense is passed on to the students' families by necessity. We hope to decrease the student-paid price as much as possible so that nobody is excluded because they can't pay.
All donations will go directly to helping a highly motivated, low-income student travel to learn more about civil rights, equality, and their nation's history.
The trip will be the third week of May, so this campaign can only last until the second week. At that point we'll have to give families the final price tag based on what's left to pay.
