Medical Expenses of Luke Casey

Donation protected
It's his laugh. Sure, Luke Casey has many admirable qualities that make him a wonderful guy--his heartfelt devotion to his wife of 10-plus years, Melinda; his selfless devotion to his adorabe nine-year-old daughter, Kamryn; his faithful service to the state of Vermont as a corrections officer; or, the unconditional support that he has always shown us, his lifelong friends from his hometown in Cortland, NY--sure, there are those. But, what makes Luke Casey really stand out in a crowd--literally--is that laugh! For those of you that know Luke, you're likely already grinning from ear-to-ear as his unique laugh comes to mind.

Luke's infectious laugh is different from others. It is a loud, whole-hearted expression of pure joy. His laugh has gotten him into trouble over the years, gotten him out of trouble, but mostly, just made us content to be along for the ride. A laugh like Luke's is a gift to us all. Whether you're having a good or bad day--you have no other option but to join in once Luke is on a roll. We should mention that you won't be allowed to escape that contagious laughter until he is finished--and it's going to be a while! For years now, medical experts have told us about the proven health benefits of the stress-relieving qualities of laughter. If this is true, then Luke Casey is a bonafide mobile health clinic!

We are saddened to report that Luke and his family have less reason to laugh these days. He is living what is, for most of us, a worst nightmare. A cautious trip to the doctor to investigate a seemingly harmless bump on his leg has unearthed a rare, but extremely aggressive form of cancer called Rhabdomyosarcoma.

Thirty days ago, Luke was the picture of health, contemplating the approach of "The Big 4-0" and caught up in the everyday cycle of life that we all tend to take for granted. This drastic change in his health has left him on medical leave from his job, and instead commuting back and forth to Boston, MA for the critical chemotherapy treatments that we pray will save his life.

Although they are blessed to have health insurance, the additional out-of-pocket costs--namely large coinsurance/copays for doctor's visits and costly prescriptions, expensive overnight accommodations in Boston to receive his chemo treatments (four hours away from home) and the expenses accrued in the back-and-forth travel from Vermont to Boston--these costs and many other unknown expenses are expected to add up quickly.

His first chemotherapy treatment is today, April 10, 2014. These are his first steps down what must seem an unsurmountable and terrifying road.

We, his childhood friends, are coming together to try and establish a fund that will help alleviate the considerable financial burdens that this wonderful family is suffering. While we can't take the cancer from his body, together we can perhaps raise enough to cover some expenses,  thereby allowing Luke and his family to focus on the fight of their lives. If the tables were turned, Luke and Melinda would be the first to volunteer their help to us.

Let's be there for them.

Thank you for joining us in donating what we can to make sure that precious laugh is heard throughout the years as we all,God-willing,grow old together.
