Dave and I met in 2001 while we were attending Colorado State University. After a very long time of dating, Dave finally decided to pop the question in 2010. We got married on August 19th 2011 and were excited to see what was in store for us. We decided to hold off on kids for a year since we wanted to do some traveling. We decided to start fertility drugs in late 2012. To our surprise we got pregnant the first round! We were so excited to tell our families since this would be the first grandchild for each side. All of our doctors appointments went well and we couldn't be happier! I started to feel sick in the middle of March and decided to go to the ER. They tested me for everything but no one seemed to know why my back was hurting me. They sent me home and I tried to rest and get better. A couple of days later we were back in the hospital but this time I had to stay and deliver our little girl. Lily was born on March 18th at 18 weeks. The doctors decided that the cause of my miscarriage was due to all the clotting disorders that I have. We were given the go ahead to try again but needed to be monitored more closely.
After 5 months of trying we were ecstatic to find out we were expecting our second child! This time I saw my hematologist every other week to ensure that clots would not be found in my placenta. We were thrilled to find out we were expecting a boy and that everything looked normal at our 16 week appointment. We were finally putting our guard down when I started to have the same symptoms on Valentine's Day this year. We went straight to the hospital where they took more tests and couldn't determine why my liver enzymes were so high. I stayed there for 5 days and was feeling better. When I was discharged I was 20 weeks pregnant. I was half way done but still had a long 4 weeks till he was viable. Two days after I was discharged I was back in the hospital because I was in so much pain. This time we were told that my liver and kidney's were starting to shut down. There was only way to make them go down. Ryder was born on February 21st at 20 weeks. This time the doctors told me HELLP Syndrome was the cause of my symptoms. The only way to get rid of it was to deliver. A decision that we did not want to make.
We were told by 3 doctors that if we were to try to get pregnant again, we would unfortunately have the same outcome. Once we were told this, we decided that surrogacy would be an option we would consider. After doing our research we decided to take the plunge and go the surrogacy route. We are excited to see what happens over the next year with the support of our friends and family.
