Una strada a prova d'orso

Donation protected

Let’s make a dangerous road safe for the bears! Some private donors have committed to funding half of the work, but under one condition: Salviamo l’Orso has to collect another € 30.000, among its members, friends and supporters.

On 2019 Christmas Eve night, a female Marsican brown bear was killed on the SS17: a busy road in Abruzzo. The bear was run over by a car while crossing the road with her cub. The cub came back many times to the crash site looking for its mother. The staff of the National Park of Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise and the Maiella National Park, that were monitoring the cub, agreed that its life was at risk.
This event upset us, made us sad and angry. And continues to do so today. Another tragic episode has intensified these feelings. On the same road, in fact, on 23th January 2023 the young bear known as Juan Carrito lost his life. The bear was run over by a car while crossing the road. There was a media hype around Carrito’s tragic end because the bear was known and loved by many. However, unfortunately, the death of bears in road accidents is one of the most feared and predictable. Especially on dangerous roads, as the SS17.
Roads, highways and infrastructures constantly fragment the habitat of the bears. We need to make the bears’ movement safe, if we care about bear protection and if we want to prevent further serious losses caused by road accidents. And we must do it immediately! We have to do it before other animals lose their lives in this way. When we started this fundraising campaign, Carrito was still alive. Let us then make sure that his death is not completely useless. Let us turn the teachings that this bear left us into concrete actions: the safety of roads cutting through wildlife territories is a priority, we must loose no time and we need to network.
The Marsican brown bear is an endangered subspecies: every individual is extremely valuable! Losing a bear for human causes means losing his life and cancelling the efforts for the conservation of the species and its coexistence with humans.
Those who work every day for the protection of nature and animals, like Salviamo l’Orso, cannot be indifferent to such dramatic events. After the death of the female bear in the winter of 2019, we did our best to take action immediately: in collaboration with the NPALM and WWF Italy, we built a fence along that dangerous stretch of road outside the Park’s boundaries. Fences help prevent road crossing e direct the animals to a nearby safe underpass. We are about to complete the first part of the work, but to make 1km of road safe, Salviamo l’Orso needs another €30.000. Everybody’s help is needed. Even small donors make a difference. Would you like to be one of them? Help us complete the road safety for #UnaStradaAProvaDOrso. Donate here!

ABOUT US: Salviamo l’Orso ONLUS is an association dedicated to the Marsican brown bear’s protection and conservation. For ten years it has been operating in the Central Apennines (in the regions of Abruzzo, Lazio, Molise, Umbria and Marche) in order to secure a future for the remaining population of marsican brown bears, counting approximately 60 individuals; the marsican brown bear is still at risk of becoming extinct.

THE PROJECT: “A bear’s proof road” is the crowdfunding campaign launched by Salviamo l’Orso to complete building 1km fence on the sides of the dangerous road where on 2019 a female Marsican brown bear was killed by a car. The young female bear left a cub orphaned.
The road, which is very busy, crosses an important wildlife corridor. This corridor is the Marsican brown bear population’s route of expansion from its "core area" to the south-west area. The subspecies now counts very few individuals.
A first part of the road’s safety work was realized, but we need another €30.000, to complete the fence. Join the donors community to create a safe road for people and wildlife.
