Hey Guys!
I'm headed to Malawi to work in women's health, education, fistula repair and catching those babies.
I'm travelling to Lilongwe the nation's capital to volunteer for two months. I'm raising money to travel there and also make a much needed donation to the hospital!
Despite being the nations capital the centre's here have very limited resources due to the financial restraints. In Malawi which has one of the worlds worst maternal mortality rates, a shocking 1 in 36 women die in childrbirth rather than becoming a proud mother.
In addition to working as a midwife I will be educating the midwives and doctors on up to date emergency obstetric practices. I will also do some work with the Freedom from fistula Foundation.
An estimated 2 million women in Africa suffer with an obstetric fistula. A fistula usually occours during an obstructed labor when emergency care is unavailable. Women with obstructed labors often struggle until the baby dies. During this horific process loss of circulation causes tissues to die, leaving large gaps between the birth canal and bladder and rectum causing incontinence. Most women suffering with a fistula are ostracized by their families as they smell and are continually wet. They are forced to live as outcasts.
The Foundation works tirelessly to repair these and give women a chance at rehabilitation!
