Help Bring Coding to Rural India

Hi, my name is Sonia Uppal and I'm a sophomore at Los Altos High School in Silicon Valley, California. I love to design and create crafts and music, and over the last few years have been learning computer programming as another way to express myself.
Recently I came across the Raspberry Pi which is a little computer, about the size of a phone, built to teach programming to kids. Here in Silicon Valley and the US we have many opportunities to learn coding, but in my travels to rural India I found that kids there have no exposure to this exciting world.
The Raspberry Pi with case
I have embarked on a project to teach coding to kids at the Saraswati Niketan School, in rural North India. I will be using the Raspberry Pi to teach the Python programming language to 30 freshman and sophomores at the school. So far I have gotten the permission from the School principal, been in discussions with the staff, talked to the kids, developed the curriculum, prepared a budget and am now looking at procuring 10 Pi Teaching Sets with this fundraising effort. There are a lot of logistical hurdles to be overcome to get this done in rural India. But from the excitement at the school, I am confident that the project will have a lasting impact and raise the ambitions of the kids, especially the girls there. I have been inspired by a similar project done by a team of volunteers in rural Cameroon.

I have called the project Pi à la code and have created a blog http://pi-a-la-code.ghost.io/ detailing my journey for the project. I will be blogging throughout my entire journey, I would love it if you followed my efforts.
Your donation will go towards the cost of the Pi Teaching Sets which comprise the Raspberry Pi and its peripherals, I will pay for my own travel and lodging. Any funding raised above the $2000 will go towards funding more Teaching Sets and more high schoolers to visit the School.
