Along with my fellow first year osteopathic medical students here at the University of New England, College of Osteopathic Medicine, I will be serving as a medical mission trip volunteer. I have always wanted to travel to a developing country and provide medical aid to patients in need. This summer I will be traveling to Costa Rica and Panama from May 24- June 6, for a two week medical mission trip. I will be working with 12 fellow students from UNECOM, and with other medical professionals, to help provide essential medical care to the underserved populations of these countries. We will be setting up clinics in remote communities in churches and other community centers. We will start in Panama and travel for the two weeks, ending in Costa Rica. We will work with patients on education for hypertension, pain management, diabetes, dental hygiene, good nutrition and food washing.
