For all of us out there that know Ken, we know he is a very calm, usually quite low key kind of guy. One of those perfect friends that always knows how to make someone laugh when they need it, and is always there if you ever need help. Ken is a great dad and husband who would do anything so he and his family can enjoy life as he does.
I feel lucky to call him my friend.
Recently Ken has had a medical condition really take him and his family by surprise. On March 27th Ken was rushed to the hospital with symptoms that originally were thought may have been a brain aneurysm, or a stroke. Actually he has a grade 5 lesion called AVM, which hemorrhaged on March 27th. It is a congenital AVM which means it has been there since birth, 42 yrs ago. It is very large, 5 centimeters and located deep in his brain near the thalamus.
After 13 days, 2 hospitalizations and pretty severe head, lower back and leg pain, he will hopefully be released from Barnes soon to follow up with interventional neuroradiologists for full findings and options for treatment.
The three main treatments are surgery, radiation and embolization. According the the Dr at BJC he is not a candidate for surgery or radiation.
Embolization is a highly technical endovascular procedure using a catheter inserted into the groin to inject a 'glue type substance' into the feeders of the AVM. The Dr said his AVM is of irregular shape and very near the thalamus, which is one of the critical brain centers.
My wife Tara and I along with Jamey and Lisa Scherer had been talking and trying to find some way to help Ken and his family with expenses at home. With Ken not being able to work and Becky being at the hospital helping him, we thought about bringing dinner, helping with transportation for school, after school events, sports for the kids etc..... We have had a lot of his friends asking us what they can do to help as well. So we are asking everyone to please help, please donate to help a great man, and a beautiful family get through this ordeal. With all of the stress placed on the family in helping Ken get better, we can help put food on the table and help with expenses that were so unforseen.
Please keep Ken, Becky and the kids in your prayers. We are asking for a miracle and praying for him anywhere an everwhere we can.
Please pray that the lesion will begin healing however that may happen.
Please pray that there will be no damaged surrounding tissue in his brain.
Please pray for the entire neurological treatment team to be inspired with interventions.
Please pray for new research to become available.
Please pray for all of their spirits to remain uplifted, hopeful and faithful.
PLEASE HIT "SHARE" AND PASS THIS ON TO ALL OF OUR FRIENDS, ALL OF KEN'S FRIENDS, TO HELP HIS FAMILY HELP HIM GET BETTER SOON.
