Her boob was not OK

Donation protected
This is the cake I got for my mom on her birthday about a week ago. On her birthday, a biopsy was performed on a lump that was found in her left breast the week before. I felt that a little humor to relieve her anxiety was in order. It worked—she laughed.

Unfortunately, the well wishes didn’t work. The lump is cancerous.

At this point, after a preliminary visit to determine her options, we have been left with many questions and very few answers. A lumpectomy is the minimum course of treatment; however, depending on the results of an upcoming biopsy on an abnormal lymph node in the same breast, and the results of a DNA test sent out to determine if she has the “cancer gene”, she may need chemotherapy, or possibly a mastectomy, or even a double mastectomy as a preventative measure. Based on strong family history (breast cancer in 4 family members on both her maternal and paternal side), we are expecting a positive result for the cancer gene.

As is the norm for life, this news couldn’t come at a much worse time. As many of her friends (and even some of my friends) know, she has been on medical leave for quite some time now because of complications with other diseases she has. What’s sad is, she is ready to return to work in the fall but there won’t be a paycheck coming her way until the new school year starts.

Joel and I are of course going to help as much as we can, but we can’t provide her all the financial support she needs. We would be grateful to anyone who could provide anything they can to help my mom get through this. We have no clue at this point what the bills are going to amount to, but just as an example, the DNA test was $4300, and we’re not even sure the insurance is going to cover all of it, or what percentage they will pay.

It’s hard to reach out to friends like this—I know you all have your own lives, and your own problems. But what can I do? This is my mom. I’m going to do everything I can to keep her! We will of course keep you all updated, through facebook and through the gofundme page. If you would like any more details, please private message me or my mom.

Thank you everyone.
