Della Daugherty is the wife of Russell Brunner and mother to Logan (age 5). She is a CODA (Child of Deaf Adults), and her parents are Tom and Martha Daugherty.
Della was hospitalized at the beginning of March with a severe sinus infection. She was in ICU, seemed to be improving, then was moved out of ICU. In the days following, she took a turn for the worse with the infection moving from her sinuses to the ear then to the brain. On March 7, 2014, Della had a craniotomy to clear a mass of infection and relieve pressure in the brain.
It is unclear when, but at some point during all of this Della had a stroke leaving her immobilized on the right side. She could not speak or sign at the time. She began physical, occupational, and speech therapies while still hospitalized. When she was cleared by all the medical doctors on her case at the hospital, Della was transferred to HealthSouth Lakeshore Rehabilitation Hospital to continue her therapies more intensively.
Della is now home and continues to progress everyday. She is very determined to do whatever is necessary to aid in her recuperation. Della continues to regain strength and function on her right side, but she still struggles with speech and sign language fluency.
Della is a Nationally Certified American Sign Language interpreter. She is employed by Sorenson Communications as a Video Relay Interpreter. At this time, Della is unable to work and is ineligible for long term disability benefits. She is the sole provider for her family, and they are now faced with unexpected medical bills and a loss of income.
On May 17, 2014 Vestavia Bowl is hosting a bowling fundraiser for Della, but there are many out of towners who won't make it to the event. So for those who cannot make it to the fundraiser, donations can be made here for Della and her family.
