Medical Volunteer Trip to Nepal

I chose to persue a medical career with the value of service as a top priority. I have completed one year at a medical school with a mission of service, and have been privileged to serve the city of Camden NJ as a health care provider and volunteer. Over the past year I have been surrounded by the healthcare disparities within this community, and the people that they impact. I have watched diseases of physical and mental health tare through families, many resulting in circumstances that are truly unimaginable, inhumane, and sad. Meeting the basic medical needs in the city of Camden and underserved areas alike go a long way. As a young student doctor I have aspirations to build a career around serving underserved areas in the United States and internationally; an opportunity has arisen to volunteer as a healthcare provider in Nepal that I intend to use as a first and momentous step in the direction of serving indigent populations overseas.
Through the IVHQ organization I will have the opportunity to work at a hospital in Katmandu, and to deliver medical care to surrounding remote areas where medical care is sparse. My duties will be helping children with physical therapy, participating in rounds within the emergency room, tending to burn victims, helping mothers with newborn babies, giving vaccinations, and delivering health education. I will also be learning by shadowing physicians in different areas of expertise. It is my desire to give what I can to the community while I am there and bring back an experience, which will add to my motivation, and incite an enthusiasm that I can share with my colleagues; all with the ultimate goal in mind of making a difference by delivering healthcare to people in poverty now and in the future.
