Andrew Roman: Recovery and Medical Bills

Donation protected

January 1st 2014 - we were all celebrating a new year with dreams and wishes of the year to come. Sharing special moments with family and friends. No one would of known that in the weeks to come our family would be tested by the biggest challenge of all - Andrew's LIFE.

I have created this page for my cousin Andrew Roman and his family. At the young age of 25, a Correction Officer for Union County, recently engaged and planning a new life with his fiancé and high school sweetheart. Life could not be better than this for him and the love of his life.

Andrew suffered an abnormal stomach pain which rushed him to the hospital. He was sent home with pain killers only to come back the next day and was admitted to Overlook Hospital. The pain was still there but was being monitored by the staff.

After 3 days of observations, his intestines ruptured and was rushed into the operating room. After the surgery the doctors gave my family the worst news. Andrew had to be placed in ICU and was in a induced comma due to the rupture of his intestines which caused his colon to tear.

The inflammation of his upper torso was so severe that the doctors informed us that his wound could not be closed due to so much swelling. There was a six inch gap where the skin would not come together. Within the first week Andrew had three more emergency surgeries and was placed on a respirator.

Hours seemed like days and days seemed like years. The stomach wound is still open and only holding the intestines and stomach in place by a thin mesh. After being in the ICU for over a month he was treated with different procedures and medications.

After a month he was slowly brought back to us. Everyday was a different challenge for him. But the challenge is not over yet. He was finally sent home with two colon bags and a machine which keeps his wound free of infection.

The doctors keep reminding us that the road is long and hard. Andrew has wonderful nurses, therapists and aids that help him while he is home. The entire family has been so supportive emotionally and physically. A BIG thank you to all the Union County Correction Officers that have helped Andrew's family during this tough time.

Now that Andrew is home the struggle and the worrying begins because health insurance can only cover so much. The doctors are telling us that it will be 9 months to a year before they can even close Andrews wound again. We are asking for your generous help and donation. So that Andrew and my family will not have to worry about any expenses or medical bills while he is home recovering.

Thank you for all the donations and so many prayers.
