Preventing pregnancy issues: "8000 New Lives"

Donation protected
Raising money for preventing pregannt mother and foetus issues before and during labour.

We, the Rotaract and Rotary community from Öresund region (Sweden and Denmark) together with Rotaract Chisinau are raising funds for "8000 new lives" project, aiming to buy medical equipment (cardiotographs CTG, obstetrics) for hospitals in Moldova and deliver the relevant education for the machine to be properly used.

This fundraiser has the invaluable financial support of the Rotary community, mainly from Sweden. Thus, the project team is aiming for parallel fundraising from Rotary community, a sum that is equal or greater to the amount crowdfunded.

So far we have delivered a CTG costing ~25.000 SEK (~2.500 USD) in April 2018. At this moment, we are raising in parralel money from Rotary community in Sweden, Denmark and Moldova.

Why did we start this fundraiser?
The Maternity Ward of the Chisinau Municipal Hospital No.1 sees almost 8000 child-births a year. Some of these are met with severe complications that pose a threat to both the mother and the child.

One of the most prevalent complications the doctors have to deal with is the asphyxia of the foetus before and during labour as well as its consequences. These alone account for almost 25% of the total perinatal deaths. Many complications can be noticed and prevented with proper monitoring equipment. The existing equipment is already worn out and old.

The cardiotocograph, or an Electronic Foetal Monitor, simultaneously records the heart-rate of the foetus, the uterine contractions and the movements of the foetus, thus providing the doctors with an accurate assessment of the foetus’ state. With a better insight, they can now quickly react when the readings point towards an issue and perform a C-section, greatly reducing the number of accidents and their severity.

Last spring, Rotaract Club Chisinau, Rotaract Malmö-Lund and Rotary Lund City acquired a new CTG for the Obstetrics Department No.2 of the Chisinau Municipal Hospital No.1. According to the data provided by the hospital, the cardiotocograph has since been used in more than 600 childbirths, from April to December 2018.

Encouraged by the success of the previous initiative, we continuing the project, aiming to raise funds here for 8  cardiotocographs.

We chose to buy Fetal Monitor, Model: BT-350L, Bistos, costing about 2500 USD/piece.

We deeply appreciate you taking the time to read this request, and kindly appreciate your help and feedback. THANK YOU!

Our commitment to transparency

●     The money will be collected in an account from Rotary District, managed by a Senior Banker, who will then pay directly the supplier.
●     The project has the wise guidance of Ann-Marie Grönberg, president of Rotary Lund City Club. Ann-Marie is planning a trip to Moldova with Rotarians from Sweden in May 2019, both for doing a project inspection and as tourists.
●     The team is doing both announced and unannounced visits to the hospital, in order to check how the machine is working.

Ensuring the devices are used as intended: Education
In order for the equipment to be used effectively,  we are organizing training for the local medical personnel. The first technical training was delivered at the delivery of the first CTG, in April 2018. We  are working on a more advanced training, taking place on March 2019 at the Chisinau Municipal Hospital No.1. The curriculum is going to be updated soon.

Who are we?
Rotary is a global network of 1.2 million neighbors, friends, leaders, and problem-solvers who see a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change – across the globe, in our communities, and in ourselves.

For example, Rotary, along with our partners, has reduced polio cases by 99.9 percent worldwide since our first project to vaccinate children in the Philippines in 1979. Rotarians have helped immunize more than 2.5 billion children against polio in 122 countries.

Rotaract traces its roots back to 1968 as a Rotary International youth program, the goal of which was to take action through service to community.

The project is an effort by
