Who am I?
Hi everyone! My name is Javier Munoz. I was born and raised in East Los Angeles, where I graduated from J. A. Garfield High School (GHS) in 2009. I went on to study History at UCLA, where I graduated in 2013. While at UCLA, I noticed there was a disproportionately low number of Latina/o students. The lack of opportunity for people with a similar background to my own became more obvious when I came back to East LA after graduation. At that moment, I decided I wanted to give back to a new generation of GHS students. Last year, I participated in the Copenhagen program of the Humanity in Action Fellowship Program. I spent a month studying human rights and minority issues in Copenhagen, Denmark in preparation for an "Action Project ." This community initiative is an opportunity to transform my ideas into action and help present college as a realistic option for students from East LA. This fall I am beginning a PhD program in United States History at UCLA.
What is CAP @ UCLA?
CAP @ UCLA is a college access and academic enrichment program for students from East LA, specifically J. A. Garfield High School students. It aims to provide a select group of twelve working class Latina/o students in the 9th and/or 10th grade with the knowledge and guidance necessary to attend college upon graduation from high school. By informing students early in their high school career, we can reach students who never considered college a realistic option and help guide them to reach that goal. With this small effort we can help bridge the Latina/o higher education attainment gap in California.
The program will take the form of four all day Saturday Academies to take place at UCLA in October 2015. Each Saturday will feature a lecture by university professors about topics relevant to the lives of our participating students. This program will also introduce students to a college campus environment and allow them to experience a college lecture first hand. Professor Mario A. Escobar will share his immigration story and speak about the importance of a college education. Professor Kelly Lytle Hernandez will speak about the relevance of immigration history for our community. Professor Gaye Theresa Johnson will speak about the antiracist coalitions between Mexican Americans and African Americans in Los Angeles. It is my hope that these lectures will inspire the students to give back to others.
The lectures will be followed by ice breaker exercises, college access workships, and professional development workshops. Students will be taught about the following:
A-G Requirements
How to Write a Personal Statement
How to write a Resume and prepare for an Interview
How to find and apply for scholarships
How to do Research by UCLA Library Staff
The Admissions and Financial Aid process
And many other useful workshops meant to place them on the college track. Furthemore, they will be joined by mentors for lunch. The majority of these mentors will be people from the East LA community who attended GHS and graduated from college. They will be able to give students advice and answer many of their questions about college because they understand where they are coming from. Breakfast and Lunch will be provided for all participants.
Where do you come in?
This is a chance for you to help a young student have a better chance to attend a college or university by donating a couple dollars. You might be someone who never had that opportunity and would like to ensure other kids do or you might be someone who received the support required to attend college and would like to pay it forward. This is the time where you can make a difference in someone else's life. Every little bit counts! All the funds collected here will go toward providing the following:
Breakfast & Lunch for all participants (90% of our estimated budget)
Printed Materials
Notebooks for Students
Name Tags, etc.
Any leftover funds will be saved for next year when the program begins with a new group of students. We can all do this together! Thank you for your trust and support! And please don't forget to share this with your family, friends, neighbors, and co-workers!
