Help us support the Pyles!

In May of 2013, at less than one year of age, our niece, Alison, was diagnosed with a rare childhood brain tumor. Almost a year after her initial diagnosis, Alison is continuing her battle and doing great. Alison possesses great spirit and she shows it every day. She deals with weekly chemotherapy, eye patching to improve her vision, blood tests, medicines and a variety of other challenges that many of us can only imagine. All the while she continues to grow and develop - learning to walk, talk and make her opinions well known to everyone around.

She and her parents, Matt and Robin, have a long road ahead of them. Her initial bout of chemotherapy will continue through the summer and the monitoring of her health will continue to be a significant part of her life going forward - at less than two years old she's already had more MRIs than most people have in a lifetime. With Alison's diagnosis it is very likely that this will not be her only round of chemo therapy.

The impact of Alison's cancer on the Pyles is hard to describe. Having a child undergoing chemotherapy changes even them most minute details of daily life. Among the many daunting challenges that the Pyles face is the financial burden that accompanies a diagnosis like this. Besides medical bills there are a myriad of expenses that insurance does not cover: regular trips from Burlington to Boston (over 200 miles) to meet with specialists; since Alison cannot be in daycare while undergoing chemo, Robin has been unable to work for almost a year; and, each meeting with Alison's medical team means a day that Matt too cannot work. Raising a child is expensive enough - raising a child who is fighting cancer while one parent is unable to work is a challenge I think many of us would have a hard time facing.

It is with all this in mind that Abby and I are hoping to raise money to help defray some of the costs the Pyles face. On April 26th we will be running the Nashville Country Music 1/2 Marathon. We are excited by the challenge, but we are more excited by the opportunity to use the event as a fundraising opportunity to support the Pyles. Together we can do a small part to help alleviate some of the financial stresses associated with Alison's diagnosis and allow Matt and Robin to focus more of their time and energy on Alison. Please help the Pyles by giving what you can and by keeping Alison, Robin and Matt in your thoughts.
