We could never expect what was coming, and now that a process of recovery has started, I feel stronger and would like to share with you what happened and ask for your sincere help.  On September 30th, I left home early to go to work, gave my wife Elizabeth (Bady) a kiss and a big hug and went to work happy. The day passed, we talked, and she texted me as usual, saying that she loved me. Later that evening we were both excited for the Lana Del Rey show that we were planning to attend. The last time I heard from her was at 6:30 pm when she sent me an email with the concert tickets. She was supposed to pick me up at 7 pm but didn’t show up. It was fairly normal for her to be a bit late, so I didn’t think anything of it. After a while, unable to get through, I called my neighbours to check on her. At that point, she was already on the floor seizing with our puppy by her side. Bady had suffered a brain hemorrhage due to a congenital brain malformation called AVM rupture, a very rare condition. A brain arteriovenous malformation (AVM) is a tangle of abnormal blood vessels connecting arteries and veins in the brain. Though she did not know that she had this condition, it was a deep fear of hers that she would one day suffer a stroke while alone. Something I now believe was a premonition. Bady is 38 years old and was a very active, intelligent and strong woman. We were building our dreams together. We had left our home country of Brazil 3 years ago to move to Canada to have a better life. Bady barely spoke English, but she bravely threw herself into the new life she and I were building. After 2 years, not only did she graduate from university in Vancouver, but we also received our residency visas! This past year, we were planning big things – we were preparing to have our first baby, working with a bank to buy our first home, and were planning our first ski adventure! But the universe has its own way to show us new paths and we learned what little control we actually have over our life and destiny.  Both of our lives changed drastically 60 days ago. It’s a miracle she didn’t die. God gave us a chance thanks to the wonderful doctors at Vancouver General Hospital (VGH) and a successful surgery that saved her life. I am so grateful for all the professionals at VGH who have helped during Bady’s time there. After the surgery, she was in a coma for a week. Now she is awake but it’s hard to tell how much damage the bleeding has done. She is unable to communicate, nor shows us how much cognition she has, and physically is unable to move a majority of her body. The path to recovery will be long.  She was temporarily moved to a nursing home to be able to get 24h attention. While we don’t know the full extent of her recovery costs will be yet, the expenses are already adding up beyond our means. She was self-employed and my job does not provide health benefits that could help cover some of the costs. Some of the expenses are special transportation, adapted wheelchair rental, medical supplies not covered by the government, private physiotherapist to ensure she is able to get the best possible chance of recovery, she will also require specialized home care and equipment after she is not able to stay at the nursing home anymore.  Any kind of help will be greatly appreciated, whether if it’s with expenses, professional contacts, or personal messages of support. I’m truly grateful for all the kindness and love I’m receiving from all our friends and family. This is what keeps me going strong.    Thank you very much for your time. Lots of love. Nunca poderíamos imaginar o que estava por vir, e agora que um processo de recuperação começou, sinto-me mais forte e gostaria de compartilhar com você o que aconteceu e pedir sua ajuda. No dia 30 de setembro de 2019, saí cedo de casa para trabalhar, dei um beijo na minha esposa Elizabeth (Bady) e um grande abraço e fui trabalhar feliz. O dia passou, conversamos e ela me mandou uma mensagem como sempre, dizendo que me amava. Mais tarde naquela noite, estávamos ambas empolgadas com o show da Lana Del Rey que iamos assistir. As 18h30 ela me enviou um e-mail com os ingressos do show, foi a ultima vez que tive noticias. Ela deveria me pegar às 19h, mas não apareceu. Era bastante normal que ela se atrasasse um pouco, então eu esperei por uns 20 minutos ate comecar a mandar mensagens. Depois de um tempo sem resposta, liguei para meus vizinhos (amigos queridos) para checar se o carro estava na garagem, com a resposta positiva pedi para eles subirem pois sabia que algo estava errado. Nesse momento, ela já estava no chão convulsionando com o nosso cachorro de 8 meses ao lado dela. Bady havia sofrido uma hemorragia cerebral devido a uma malformação congênita rara (malformação arteriovenosa - MAV). Uma malformação arteriovenosa cerebral (MAV) é um emaranhado de vasos sanguíneos anormais que conectam artérias e veias no cérebro. Embora ela não soubesse que tinha essa condição, curiosamente ela comentava sobre o medo de que um dia sofresse um AVC sozinha. Algo que agora acredito ser uma premonição.

<div> Bady tem 38 anos e era uma mulher muito ativa, inteligente e forte. Estávamos construindo nossos sonhos juntos. Havíamos deixado o Brasil, há 3 anos, para nos mudar para o Canadá e ter uma vida melhor. Bady mal falava inglês, mas corajosamente se jogou na nova vida que ela e eu estávamos construindo. Após 2 anos, ela não apenas se formou na universidade de Vancouver BCIT, mas também recebemos nossos vistos de residência! Estávamos planejando grandes coisas - estávamos nos preparando para ter nosso primeiro bebê, trabalhando com um banco para comprar nossa primeira casa e planejando nossa primeira aventura de esqui! Mas o universo tem seu próprio jeito de nos mostrar novos caminhos e sentimos na pele o pouco controle que realmente temos sobre nossa vida e destino. Nossas vidas mudaram drasticamente há 70 dias. É um milagre ela ainda estar viva. Deus nos deu uma chance e graças aos maravilhosos médicos do Vancouver General Hospital (VGH) e a uma cirurgia bem-sucedida sua vida foi salva. Sou muito grata a todos os profissionais do VGH que ajudaram durante o tempo que a Bady estava lá. Após a cirurgia, ela ficou em coma por um bom tempo. Agora ela está acordada, mas é difícil dizer quanto dano o sangramento causou. Ela é incapaz de se comunicar, nao conseguimos saber quanta cognição ela tem, e fisicamente é incapaz de mover a maioria de seu corpo. O caminho para a recuperação será longo e doloroso para todos nos. Ela foi temporariamente transferida para uma casa de repouso para receber cuidados ate comecar a responder um pouco mais e poder ir para a rehabilitacao. Embora ainda não se saiba a extensão total dos custos de recuperação dela, as despesas já estão aumentando além do nosso alcance. Ela trabalhava por conta própria e meu trabalho não oferece benefícios de saúde que poderiam ajudar a cobrir alguns dos custos. Algumas das despesas imediatas são transporte especial, aluguel de cadeira de rodas adaptada ate pegarmos a fornecida pelo governo, suprimentos médicos não cobertos pelo governo, fisioterapeuta particular para garantir que ela possa obter a melhor chance possível de recuperação (o mais importante neste momento); ela também precisará de cuidados e equipamentos especializados em casa quando ela estiver se recuperado suficiente para isso. Qualquer tipo de ajuda será muito apreciada, seja com despesas, contatos profissionais ou mensagens pessoais de suporte.
