We are a group of civic-minded booklovers working to establish a library/community center for the people in the Western Highlands of Panama.

 

The area once had a very popular library and community center. It was founded in 1961 by an Oblate Benedictine Monk, Brother Elred Wetli. When you ask long-time residents about it, they have many fond memories of the library and Brother Elred. Many residents credit the library's existence with changing their lives through the English classes and other education they received in the library. They also remember it has a community center where families would gather. The library not only had books, they also loaned out toys on the weekend. Below are memories people have shared about the library:

 

 

Sadly the library did not survive the Brother’s passing. The library was closed in 2013, and the books were left inside to suffer from the elements. Though all the books were covered in dust and smelled of mold, some are still in useable condition, while others have either so yellowed with age or been eaten by termites (or maybe by literal bookworms?) that the only option is to recycle the paper they were printed on. The collection needs to be updated.

 

 

The new library will serve the District of Tierras Altas (pop. 40,000 of which 8,000 are under 15), comprised of 5 small towns: Volcan, Cerro Punta, Cuesta de Piedra, Nueva California and Paso Ancho. There are no other libraries in the district or even in the schools. Books are beyond reach for most of the population. The median income is $380/month, while a paperback novel from the grocery store costs about $11 -an astronomical sum for most families. A library/community center would make reading a possibility for everyone and fundamentally improve the educational prospects of the students.

 

The project is spearheaded by the “Foundation of Art and Culture of Tierras Altas” Among the members are a librarian, an accountant, a lawyer, a graphic artist and web designer, an architect, a former director of an NGO, and people with experience in fundraising and social media. Biblioteca San Benito

 

Somos un grupo de amantes de libros que estamos trabajando en establecer una biblioteca y centro comunitario para los residentes de Tierras Altas de Panama.

 

Este área contó hace un tiempo con una biblioteca y centro comunitario muy popular. Fue fundado en los años 61 por un hermano Benedictino, Brother Elred Wetli. Cuando le preguntamos a los residentes de estos lugares sobre la misma , todos tienen lindos recuerdos , tanto de la Biblioteca como del Brother Elred. Muchos pobladores le dan crédito a la existencia de esta biblioteca el haber cambiado sus vidas a través del aprendizaje del inglés y otras materias que recibieron allí. Recuerdan que el centro comunitario era el lugar donde las familias se reunían . La biblio no solo tenía libros , también allí donaban y prestaban juguetes los fines de semana. Algunos de los comentarios y recuerdos que nos han compartido las personas de la comunidad :

 

 

Tristemente , la biblioteca fue cerrada al poco tiempo después de la muerte del Brother Elred. Cuando se cerro en 2013, los libros fueron olvidados adentro a sufrir las inclemencias del tiempo. Aunque todos los libros estaban cubiertos de polvo y olían a moho , algunos aún estaban en condiciones salvables otros estaban amarillentos y comidos por polilla. Estos solo sirven como papel para reciclar. Muchos de los libros originales de la biblioteca fueron donados por bibliotecas de la Zona del Canal cuando aún estaba bajo control de Los Estados Unidos. Esta colección de libros necesita ser actualizada.

 

La nueva biblioteca servirá al Distrto de Tierras Altas ( 40,000 habitantes de los cuales 8,000 son menores de 15 años) Este Distrito está formado por 5 pequeños poblados : Volcan, Cerro Punta , Nueva California , Cuesta de piedra y Paso Ancho. No hay ninguna otra biblioteca en estos lugares. Los libros son prácticamente inalcanzables para la mayoría de los habitantes de este sector . El ingreso bruto es de $380.00 por mes y una novela barata en un supermercado cuesta $11.00. Suma astronómica para la mayoría de las familias. Una Biblioteca permitiría el leer libros una realidad para todos.

 

Este hermoso proyecto está siendo liderado por La Fundación Arte y Cultura de Tierras Altas. Entre los miembros de este Grupo tenemos una bibliotecaria, un abogado, un contador , un arquitecto , un diseñador gráfico, un ex director de ONGs , personas con experiencia en gestión de fondos Y redes sociales. Hemos expuesto este Olán de reapertura a la comunidad Con excelente aceptación Desde noviembre 2021 los voluntarios de este grupo han logrado :

 

- catalogar , empacar y mover los libros a un area de almacenamiento a manera que el edificio existente quede libre para su remodelación.

-elaborar y distribuir encuestas entre los miembros de la comunidad para conocer sus inquietudes y necesidades con referencia a este proyecto.

-Desarrollar un plan arquitectónico para la renovación

-investigar sobre los diferentes sistemas para catalogar los libros

-crear un logo y un sitio web

- comenzar el proceso legal para establecer la fundación bajo la cual funcionará la Biblioteca y de esta manera darle sostenibilidad y credibilidad.

 

Hemos creado este Go Fund Me para obtener fondos que nos ayuden a convertir El viejo y arruinado edificio en una biblioteca moderna y funcional que es muy necesitada en la comunidad!

 

Los fondos recaudados por este medio serán utilizados para :

-comprar los materiales necesarios para la renovación del edificio y llevarlo a los estándares de seguridad modernos.

-comprar inmobiliario. Muchos de los estantes están en buenas condiciones pero se necesitan sillas y mesas , computadoras etc

-renovar y actualizar la colección de libros
