Send me to Grad School in Germany

Donation protected

After many years of battling mental illness, I am off to Heidelberg University in Germany. One of the world's most prestigious universities to pursue my Master’s degree and if I have a qualifying Master’s thesis I can begin my PhD program and pursue my lifelong dream of becoming a college professor. When I first decided to go to college 5 years after graduating from high school, I did so because I said to myself if I can go through life fighting my mental illness I can go through anything including school which was always difficult for me. Those first few days of being a nontraditional first generation college student from a farm worker background were tough, but I learned from parents to fight and win against all odds. To be that rose that grew in the concrete and even with my damage petals to blossom and reach for the sun. As a kid growing up in farm working housing in the Skagit Valley I never knew how to name my oppression or how to explain my marginality, my research as an undergrad has looked into this marginality and into this oppression and explained its history and the context in which I and other Latinos in the Skagit Valley have grown up. How we as roses born in concrete have reached for the sun when no one cared. Going to Heidelberg will give me the opportunity to use the institution to research the history of Latinos in Washington State, a history which has largely been ignored but is waiting to be uncovered and shared with those communities that need it most. I have received some funding from the university to pursue my studies but unfortunately it is not enough to cover the entire cost of my degree and loans are not an option because FAFSFA does not cover German universities. It is for this reason that I ask my community to help me during this time cover these expenses and also hold me accountable to doing the work of the activist-scholar once I graduate and move back to the Skagit Valley. If you are able to donate I will forever be grateful and will send you a post card from Heidelberg if you are not able to donate please share with all your friends as this may the only opportunity I will ever get to pursue my dream. Huei Tlazo camachillia (Thanks so much).
