Help Joe Kick Cancer's Butt!!!

Donation protected
On December 23rd around 7:30am, Joe and Shaunna received a devastating call from Joe's primary care Doctor. His routine lab work came back extremely abnormal and the Doctors were adamant he come in immediately. His platelet count was 10 (normal is 150+) and his white count was through the roof. By 10am they received the daunting diagnosis of leukemia but needed a bone marrow biopsy to confirm exactly which type of leukemia they were up against. They were admitted to the Hematology/Oncology unit and by 1pm, Joe was having a bone marrow biopsy. It was on Christmas Day that they had a confirmed diagnosis of Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia (APL) and immediately started the 36 day induction chemo regimen.

The Doctors were relieved to give them this diagnosis as they explained APL is a “treatable” and “curable” form of leukemia (90% remission rates and 80% cure rates) and they likely caught it early. After the induction chemo, Joe will likely be in remission but treatment unfortunately does not stop there. Joe and Shaunna will return home after their month long stay in the hospital and begin their new normal way of life for the next 6-8 months with outpatient chemo infusions.

Joe’s wife, Shaunna, has been his rock and stability throughout this life altering process. Having not left his side, she continues to radiate strength and display the value and importance of unconditional love.

Joe is a Spanish teacher and wrestling coach at Englewood High School. Anyone who knows him knows his love for his students and team is undeniable. Along with his diagnosis comes the harsh reality that he will be unable to return back to his kids until this grueling process is over as a result of the environment being too high risk for his delicate immune system and the daily chemo visits he will endure.

With the inability to work and subpar benefits he will receive, medical bills become steeper and create added stress during this overwhelming time.

Joe has a heart of a warrior, and the family of Joe and Shaunna have started this page on their behalf to rally all of the people who love and care for them. Together we can help ease the financial burden that comes along with treatment and recovery! Please join our team and support Joe through a contribution, big or small, as he continues to tackle cancer! We so greatly appreciate every donation. Please feel free to share this with your friends and network to get the word out!
