Summer of Solutions Hartford is a food justice nonprofit based in Hartford, CT which supports community and school gardens.
In 2014, we launched a new program called the Urban Farming Internship.
We welcomed 12 interns to join us for 7 months, to work hands-on in school and community gardens in Hartford. Our teams worked at the Annie Fisher Montessori School, the Burns Latino Studies Academy, the McDonough Elementary School, The Connecticut River Academy, the Wesley Colbert Zion Street Community Garden, and the Connecticut Trash Museum.
In addtion, we all came together for two hours every Friday for a workshop series in leadership development and urban farming.
We were able to work with over 350 students in the school gardens, 50 community members of Zion Street, and (due to the broad reach of the CT Trash Museum), we expect over 45,000 people to see our public educaitonal garden this year!

Next year, we would love to expand the program to host 16 interns at 8 garden sites throughout Hartford.
In order to support our interns and ensure that our organization remains sustainable, we charge a contract fee to each garden site. This partially supports the team that dedicates the growing season to caring for that site.
Of course, at the Wesley Colbert Zion Street Community Garden we do not charge a fee, because the garden is not connected to or supported by any institution.
Please help us raise the fee to cover the Zion Street Garden and support the interns that will spend the growing season raising food in community there.
