Thank you all for taking a moment to visit this page and giving me your support! My life is filled with many blessings, including a devoted husband and four amazing children. I also have the blessing of wearing bilateral hearing aids (one in each ear) to correct my hearing loss. Following the advice of friends & family, I am creating this page.
Despite a moderate to severe hearing loss, I am nearly able to hear and function like any other person with full hearing with hearing aids. The time has come for me to get new hearing aids. I have been wearing the same aids for over 10 years. Usually, 6 years is the max use you get out of aids. I put it off as long as possible to avoid the financial burden on our family. But I am realizing that I am hearing less and less. Friends and family are telling me that they can tell I am not hearing as well. It is time to get new hearing aids before I miss out more in my children and daily living.
This is a very stressful time for my family and I. Not just financially, either! Personally this is so difficult because I have to relearn what I am hearing. I have to retrain my brain. My audiologist believes with the new aids I will hear more than I have ever heard! Because of many advances in technology, sound is now digital in hearing aids. This means that noise will be filtered better for me and sound better. However, my brain does not understand that-I have to redefine what I am hearing. My brain thinks that I am not hearing correctly or loud enough and etc with the new aids. It will involve many trips to my audiologist and hearing aid center to adjust my "new" aids so I can mentally adjust and learn to hear correctly. As daunting as that is to me, I can't wait to hear everything I should be hearing!!!
Financially, this is very difficult for my family, as health insurances do not cover hearing aids. It has been this way for many, many years. I know I am not alone in the struggle to understand this when I simply cannot function without my hearing aids. I cannot hear without them. Even with them, I still rely greatly on lipreading.
If you feel led to help my family and I through this financial burden, it would be a blessing beyond words. That sentence doesn't convey strongly enough - A BLESSING BEYOND WORDS. I hate asking for help. We should be able to do all of this on our own with out needing your help.
