Katie’s ❤️ Fund

Meet Katie. Katie is one spectacular human being who has overcome great odds to be here today.

She is currently recovering from her 2nd heart transplant at the age of 38. Katie is one of the most positive, courageous and strongest people you will ever meet. Her optimistic outlook on life likely comes from the fact that at the age of 7, Katie underwent her first heart transplant. In fact, she was one of the first Canadian children to receive a heart transplant. With a new heart came the gift of life and a chance to live a normal childhood and embrace all of life’s adventures.

Today, her happiness comes from spending time with her husband Matt, 5 year old son Charlie and their 2 fur babies Lexi and Max.

If you know Katie, you know that you would never hear her complain or say that she wasn’t feeling well or in pain. She is one of the most optimistic people you could ever meet and takes everything life has to throw at her in stride. The past few years have been difficult for Katie and her family. Her heart had begun failing her again. Along with the decline in her heart health came an array of other painful complications and conditions which dramatically affected her overall health and wellness. She has had to undergo numerous procedures and surgeries in the past 3 years which has meant that she has not been able to fully take in all that life has to offer. Katie was also forced to give up her career as a dental assistant and has been unable to work ever since as a result of her failing health. In all of this, Katie continued to remain optimistic about her future with her family. A few weeks back, Katie’s team of doctors made the decision to once again put her on the transplant list. Having gone through all of this once before, she knew that it could be a day or 5 years to wait for a transplant. By god’s grace, Katie got the call a few days after being placed on the transplant list! With her family and husband by her side, Katie underwent surgery for her 2nd heart transplant.

Although her surgery went well, the road to a full recovery is not over. Katie will continue to be under the care of her team of doctors to ensure that her body will accept the transplant. She will need to continue to take an array of daily medications to aid her body in accepting the transplant and will be subjected to a lifetime of doctor’s visits and possibly a future kidney transplant. Katie and her family are truly grateful for the gift that she has received. They know that the road to a full recovery and a return to a “normal” quality of life will at times be riddled with bumps and setbacks. However, she will continue to fight the fight and remains optimistic about the future.

If you are reading this and wondering how you can help, your donations will go towards helping the family recoup some of the expenses that they have had to endure the past few years that Katie has been ill. Her inability to work over the past 3 years because of her condition alongside the cost of her medications, hospital stays, parking, her husband’s time away from work, childcare while Katie has been in hospital have all impacted the family.
