August 2017 Update

Dear Friends,

I'm letting you know that we are quietly reopening this campaign. It's been over three years since Dad's passing, which feels at once like yesterday and a lifetime ago. You all helped us avoid a crisis, and for the past three years we got back on our feet. Thank you.

Dad died when both Michelle and I were finishing up school. He did not get to see Michelle graduate from UCLA or see me become a certified music therapist. Michelle rushed back home from LA, cancelling all her further education plans, abandoning the completion of a second major, and forfeiting opportunities to travel abroad, to help Mom and begin providing for the family. She put all her dreams and goals on hold.

I'm pleased to be reaching out to you once again with this update. Michelle, who has for years been interested in and diligently self-studying coding, has been accepted into Rithm School, a 14-week immersive software development bootcamp course based in San Francisco. She was given a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to pursue her passion for coding when she was named the only recipient of their generous full-tuition scholarship! We are very proud that her efforts got her this far, despite a 3-year detour. Her first day at school was this past Monday and she is enjoying the material and her cohort.

So why are we reopening the campaign? After working full-time for three years to support our household financially, Michelle will be going to class for three months without pay. Any support would allow her to complete her studies with fewer distractions and also to help us remain stable while she is unable to contribute to our household income.

Here's the breakdown:
Daily BART and parking fees: $1141
Mortgage and bills: $3000
Interview prep course not included in scholarship: $4200
Meals, other expenses: $659+

... for a total of $9000. I couldn't figure how to take the total back down to $0 without making a new campaign, so I just added this new goal to the existing total.

Please contribute and share with your circles as you are able.

Thank you,

Josephine
