Who am I ?

My Name is Brandon Hay, and I have been selected to take a 3 week course in Costa Rica called the Las Nubes Project offered through York University. This course will cost $2400 (CDN). I feel that this program will complement my concurrent Master in Environmental Studies program. One of the reasons for my interest in taking the course is that I am interested in acquiring knowledge about indigenous ways of approaching economic sustainability and community economic development. I also hope that this program will facilitate my ultimate goal of finding better solutions to the pressing issues in my environment; such as how to use community led research to build stronger communities for racialized and marginalized communities in Toronto but that can also be replicated in other parts of the world.

My background:

In 2007 I started a non-profit organization called Black Daddies Club to address the gap of support for Black fathers in Toronto. Like so many others before me who do this work in the non-profit sector it was not a planned destination, neither was it something that I had gone to school for. However, I realized this kind of organization was seriously needed not only for myself but also for other Black fathers living in Toronto in order to stay sane in an environment that was not addressing any of the needs and concerns associated with Black fatherhood. Since there were no institutions or organizations in my neighbourhood that I was aware of, I chose to become pro-active and create a space for Black fathers in Toronto to express themselves; and so, Black Daddies Club was born.

I have taken an 18 month sabbatical from Black Daddies Club to complete my Master's of Environmental Studies at York University in order to deepen my analysis and equip myself to do the work that I do, more critically.

As you may know, coming up with the funds for a course such as this in a short period of time is difficult. Therefore, I am reaching out to you, my community members, for your support and sponsorship to attend/complete this course. I would be most grateful if you could help.

Below is an outline of what the funds would go towards:

$800 for air fare

$1600 for the course, which includes transportation, lodging and food.

For a total of $2400

I truly believe this trip will increase my knowledge of thinking about innovative ways of economically sustaining a non profit organization,as well as engage with Black fathers in South America and also benefit our community by being able to consistently develop and deliver relevant programs for Black fathers.

I will be sharing my learning from this course via social media and the Black Daddies Club website http://theblackdaddiesclub.com

I would like to thank you for considering this opportunity of sponsorship.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Brandon Hay.
