UWC-USA Global Leadership Forum

Hi there, friend!

My name is Alfred, and for the past two years I have been teaching English in rural Tajikistan as part of the Fulbright ETA program. Although life has been difficult in this extremely poor, land-locked country of Central Asia, I have had a group of fantastic students to get me through the rough patches during my grant period.

A number of them applied for a summer leadership camp or wilderness program at the United World College (UWC) in the US. Not only were they accepted, but they were all offered full-tuition waivers (~$4000). The average annual GDP here is $2300, which is about the cost of a ticket to the US. I was placed in a smaller city, so the average salary here is even lower, meaning most of my students live well below poverty level. Despite their setbacks, these are easily the most dedicated students I have ever had the luxury of teaching, and I would gladly take all of them on this program if I had the means to do so.

There are 4 students looking to go on the program: 3 from my city of Kulob, and 1 from a nearby city called Quargonteppa. Every one of them also happens to be from a single-parent household.

We are looking to raise money first and foremost for costs associated with travel (visa, passport, airplane, etc.), and then for things they do not have but will need for the program (hiking boots, jackets, daypacks, etc.). The rest of the money was calculated for domestic travel, affordable excursions, and food for after the program. Here is the breakdown of costs:

Visa 0160x4                           0640
Passport 0125x4                     0500
Teacher Fee 0500x1               0500
Flight to NM 0400x5               2000
Flight to US 1800x4                7200
Train to DC (RT) 0100x5          0500
Hiking Boots 0080x4               0320
Bathing Suit 0030x4                0120
Daypacks 0020x4                    0080
Shorts 0025x4                        0100
Waterproof Jacket 0050x4      0200
Water Bottles 0010x4             0040
Essentials (Sunscreen, toothbrush/paste, deodorant, etc.)
150x1                                    0150
Excursions/food/Disposable Cell Phones/travel
1000x1                                  1000
Total 13,350 x.05 (GoFundMe Fee) 670

Grand Total                          $14,018

Due to costs, it is cheapest for the students to fly into NYC, take a train to Washington, DC, and then fly from DC to their program in New Mexico. Since we had to go this route anyway, I wanted them to spend a few days in each city. There are a number of free activities, but transportation and food is not free. I am looking for accommodations with family and friends in the areas, so that cost should be covered.

Ideas we have for excursions after the program are the following:

NYC
United Nations Tour
Statue of Liberty
Ground Zero
Broadway Play (cost-pending)
Madame Toussauds House of Wax (cost-pending)
MET

DC
Smithsonian Museums
Smithsonian Zoo
Monuments
Laser Tag
IMAX movie
Chinatown
Visit to the Tajik Embassy
Meeting with Diplomats

Meet Some of the Students

Dilrabo

My name is Dilrabo Saidalieva. I am in the 9th grade. This year I found a great opportunity for spending my summer abroad, and it will be in USA. It is provided by UWC-USA and it gathers students from all over the world between the ages of 15-19. I think that it is the first time that Tajik students from Tajikistan will go there. It has got two programs: the Global Leadership Forum and the Wilderness trip. I have decided to apply for Wilderness Trip.

After I applied for it, I got a message from the school saying that I received a full scholarship for participating in this summer program. I was really happy but I have got another problem, which is the money for the airplane. The amount of money for an airplane from Tajikistan to USA (New Maxico) is about my parent's salary in one year. They don't have good jobs and of course not their salary is little. By finding out about this web site, I felt a new hope that somehow people around the world can help me.

The reason I chose the UWC-USA Summer Wilderness Program is that I want to improve my leadership skills in difficult situations. By choosing the GLF, I know I could learn more about Leadership but not as much as in the Wilderness program. I know that I will learn a lot by being in the wilderness for 16 continuous days, away form civilization, and in the middle of nowhere.

Sabrina

Hi everybody!

My name is Sabrina. I am 17 years old. I am in the 10th grade. I know four languages: Tajik, Russian, German and English. My hobby is helping people who have difficulties. I have been learning English for 8 years and I am fond of it. I have graduated the 9th grade with a red certificate (perfect grades). Every year in our country we have a competition for all academic subjects, and this is my second year participating; I took first place both years, so I have two gold medals.

We are 3 in our family: my mother, my little sister and me. My father died when I was a small girl and I grew up with my mother. Life was difficult but still I grew up educated. In the future I want to become a diplomat, but I have never been out of our country.

This year I got a great opportunity from the UWC-USA Global Leadership Forum Camp. They gave me full scholarship but I need to pay for my airline tickets. However, my family cannot afford the tickets. My mother works alone and she is the one who takes care of the family, but her salary is very low. The cost of the airline tickets will be my mom's entire salary for the year, if we do not buy anything (including food) or pay taxes. This camp will help me a lot, and it will be my first time to sit in an airplane and go abroad. This camp will help me to widen my global outlook, to improve my English skills, to make new friends and complete the project I am planning to work on. My project is to help Disabled people in my community, and give them more access to tools they need to succeed.

Please help me to raise the money if you can! Thank you very much!

With a lot of love,

Sabrina!

Muhammad

Hello! I am currently a student of Kulob State University in Tajikistan (Central Asia). This year I applied for the UWC-USA camp program and got a scholarship for the camp, which will be in the US in 2 months (starting in July). I would like to go to this camp and to the US in order to improve my communication and cross-cultural skills in a multicultural environment. Today's job market seeks good candidates with cross-cultural experience, interpersonal skills and travel experience.

For students from Tajikistan, like us, this program is really useful to gain an advantage for our future careers, learn about other countries like the US, and improve our language skills as well. In Tajikistan, the GDP is really low (2300$ per capita) and more than half of population of Tajikistan is still poor and unemployed. That's why my guardian (my grandfather) cannot afford to let me go to the camp (my round-trip flights tickets), so I have to raise that money to participate in this camp in the US. I think that is really good opportunity to experience the US through this program.

I hope that you will consider me. Maybe I will not find that opportunity to get to the US, but I hope that I will. It will be my first time outside of my hometown.
Thank you for your support!

Ahliddin

My name is Davlatov Ahliddin. I am 17 years old. I'm from Qurghonteppa city in Tajikistan. I study at secondary school â„–9 in my city, and I am in 10th grade.

In my family there is only my mother and me. My dad died when I was one year old. In my free time I like to read English books, go for walks with friends or communicate with foreign friends and share our thoughts. I need money because going to US was always one of my first desires and I need money also because I really want to improve my knowledge in the US. The program will let me learn new skills, teach me problem solving, let me make friends with people from all around the world, and learn new responsibilities.

After the GLF program, when I come back home, I want to gather youth who want to help keep our environment clean. I want to share everything that I've learned in the GLF program, show them what US methods are, and adopt those for our community. I want to make an environmental project, to keep the nature (and our city) clean and use other skills that I have learned to spread the project to other places.

The Fine Print

In the event we do not raise the total amount requested, we will ask the UWC to choose the best candidates to partake in the program, and the money will fund them.

If all students are denied a visa, they will partake in a similar program at a UWC sister school in Japan; if a single student is denied a visa, another student may take his or her place in the program.

If there is a particular student you would like to help, you can put their name in the comment section and that money will go towards the costs associated with them. If they cannot attend for any of the reasons mentioned above, we will let you know and you can decide if you want to fund a different student.

The students have agreed that in the event there is money left over after fundraising, it will be donated to the UWC-USA Summer program, to be used to help support future program participants.
