Rebecca's Medical Fund

I’m sure many of you, especially from our generation, grew up in a neighborhood where your neighbors were like family.  Rebecca Romo Chavez was that neighbor. She was like a little sister to us.  Becca and her sister Hope experienced indescribable loss at a young age when they lost their mother to cancer.  Though the loss was tragic, they had each other and they both grew up to be strong and amazing women.  Becca has been battling ovarian cancer for fifteen years.  Sadly, about  three months ago she got bad news that the cancer has spread to her colon.  She has endured three surgeries, chemotherapy, radiation, and in the midst of all of this she tragically lost her daughter Crystal to juvenile diabetes complications a little over two years ago and is now raising her granddaughter.  Even after going through a parents worst nightmare, she continues to be a devoted wife, mom, grandma, aunt, and sister to Hope Romo.

She was treated at the Southwest Gynecological Cancer Center for seven years, Lovelace Cancer Center for five years, and at UNM Cancer Center for the past three years.  Unfortunately, treatments have been exhausted in New Mexico, so the only other option is to go out of state to a cancer center to see if there are any clinical trials or treatments that could help her.  She searched high and low for an insurance that would cover her if she were to go to MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. Fortunately, her Humana PPO insurance has approved these treatments. However,  it is out of network and she will have to pay up to $10,000 out of pocket, which does not include travel, meals or lodging.  Her first appointment is February 12 and they will have to stay for 3-5 days. Airfare to Houston for her and her husband Thomas, has been donated but lodging and meals will have to be absorbed by the family.

The outpouring of love and support has been incredible. An account has been opened at US Bank and we are establishing a Go Fund Me Account for those who would like to make an online contribution.

In closing, it is our hope that we can help alleviate some of the financial hardships for Becca and Thomas so they can put their focus and energy into getting her to Houston and getting her well. Thank you so much and God bless you.
